Identify the characteristics of the UH-60A/L Blade Deice System. a. Components covered under the Blade Deice System are: (1) Ice Detector Unit (2) Outside Air Temperature (OAT) Sensor (3) Main Rotor Blades (4) Tail Rotor Blades (5) Blade Deice Controller (6) Blade Deice CTRL Panels (7) No.1 Junction Box (8) No. 2 Junction Box (9) Auxiliary AC Junction Box (10) Main Rotor Deice Junction Box 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 a. Blade Deice System (1) The blade deicing system provides for deicing of the main rotor blades, tail rotor blades and the droop stops. 9 (a) Ice Detector Unit 10 1) Mounted on the #2 engine inlet it receives 28 V dc and single phase 115 V ac from the Ice Rate Meter. 2) The 28 V dc is used for ICE DETECTOR probe power and de-icing of the probe. 3) The single phase 115 V ac is used for aspirator power. 4) The ice detector probe vibrates at a frequency of 40 Hz and any ice that accumulates on the probe will change the frequency of the probe vibration. 5) This change in frequency will be sent to the ice rate meter and displayed as an icing rate. 6) After an ice rate signal has been generated and sent to the ice rate meter and supply 28 V dc to the to the ice detector probe for 5 to 7 seconds, which melts the ice on the ice detector probe. 7) While the probe is being Deiced the ice rate meter will maintain its last received ice rate signal from the ice detector. 8) This allows time for the ice detector probe to be deiced and cooled. 9) This prevents the blade deice controller from receiving a false no ice detected signal and ensures continuous blade deice operations. (b) Outside Air Temperature Sensor (OAT) 11 1) The OAT sensor is mounted on the nose of the aircraft, above the avionics compartment door. 2) The sensor sends an outside air temperature signal in the form of resistance (OHMS) to the DEICE CONTROLLER. 3) When operating in the automatic and manual mode, the deice controller uses this signal to determine ELEMENT-ON-TIME (EOT). 4) EOT is the amount of time heating current is applied to each blade zone. 5) This time will vary from 150 milliseconds to 25 seconds dependent on temperature. 6) The colder the temperature the longer the ELEMENT-ON-TIME. 12 (c) Main Rotor Blades 1) The Deice distributor is mounted on top of the main rotor hub and allows heating voltage to be applied to the main rotor blades in opposing pairs of two and to the proper zone of the pair. 2) It also allows droop stop heating. 3) The distributor incorporates a "GATE" circuit which designates the blades as 1,2,3,4, and also finds the proper zones of each blade. 4) If the main rotor distributor is not in its proper reference position, the blade deice controller will apply 28 V dc power in a series of short pulses (375 milliseconds) to the distributor causing the distributor to enter into the synchronization mode. 5) This process will put the distributor in the proper reference position. 6) During synchronization, the controller monitors the sync pulse input signal from the distributor to check for synchronization and proper sequencing. 7) The distributor will provide a -3 to -7 volt reference signal to the controller when the stepping relay is in position for deicing to start.Show Slide - Droop Stop Heating Pin 13 14 WARNING: The droop stop is made of beryllium cooper metal, which can be a health hazard. The use of goggles is required. Avoid breathing dust while reworking damages areas. Use a dust respirator if necessary. Grinding is prohibited. Keep beryllium cooper out of open wounds. Clean up visible dust piles and wash hands and arms after maintenance. 8) Droop stops are heated continuously as long as the DEICE Power is ON, to include the TEST Mode. 9) The droop stops will begin to heat in about 30 to 60 seconds after power is applied to the Blade DEICE system (AUTO, MANUAL, or TEST). 10) The droop stops are made from Beryllium Copper. Beryllium is a magnesium element added to copper to prevent corrosion. Each main rotor blade contains 4 separate heating zones. 15 11) Each main rotor blade contains 4 separate heating zones. 12) Deicing current is sequentially applied to identical zones of opposing blades in sequential order to assure symmetrical ice shedding. 13) On the leading edge the heater mat provides 12% deice coverage of the upper portion of the blade and 17% coverage of the lower portion of the blade. 14) If the reference signal is not present, the controller continues to generate pulses (to a maximum of eight times) to advance a stepping relay in the distributor. 15) If the -3 to -7 volt sync signal is not received within the first eight-pulse cycles, the controller generates a main blade deice fail signal, which turns on the MR DEICE FAIL capsule. 16 (d) Tail Rotor Blades 1) The tail rotor brush/slip ring assembly allows heating voltage to be applied to all four tail rotor blades simultaneously. 2) There are two types of tail rotor slip rings (new style 5977-01-432-9247, old style 6105-01-310-5087). The old style while still found on aircraft can no longer be acquired in the Army supply system. 3) The new rotor slip ring's major improvement is the ability to replace the tail rotor deice cables (6150-01-432-4850) without having to replace the tail rotor slipring. 17 Caution: Correct hardware must be used or failure of the tail rotor blade deice bracket may occur. Note: A maintenance test flight is not required for replacement of tail rotor blade deice bracket. 18 19 20 4) For the deice system, the paddle has a deice heater mat and deice electrical connector. 5) The deice heater mat is an electro thermal blanket that is bonded into the paddle leading edge. 6) The electrical connector provides the electrical continuity between the deice heater blanket and the deice system. 21 7) Each paddle contains only 1 heating zone. 8) On the leading edge the heater mat provides 13% coverage of both the upper and lower surface of the paddle. 9) Heating power is applied to the entire zone on the heating mat of the paddle. 10) Tail rotor blades are simultaneously pulsed by deicing current. (e) Blade Deice Controller 1) The Blade DEICE Controller controls the functions of blade deice. 22 2) This includes Element-On-Time (EOT), Element-Off-Time (OT), and synchronization of the Main Rotor Distributor, Power distribution to the Main and Tail Rotor Slip Rings, and Test functions in conjunction with the Blade DEICE Test Panel. 3) Additionally the Deice controller controls all the Deice caution lights except the "ICE DETECTED" caution light which is controlled by the Ice Rate Meter. 4) It receives power from the #2 DC Primary Bus through the 5 amp circuit breaker on the Mission Readiness Circuit Breaker Panel. (f) Icing Rate Meter 1) The Ice Rate Meter receives 28 V dc from the No. 2 DC Primary Bus. 2) The meter indicates Liquid Water Content (LWC) in grams per cubic meter and is graduated in TRACE, LIGHT, MODERATE, and HEAVY icing rates. 3) The fail flag indicates loss of voltage or loss of ice detector signal (This condition will illuminate the ICE DETECTED caution light). 23 4) The ice rate meter also supplies 28 V dc to the caution advisory panel to illuminate the ICE DETECTED caution light and to the Ice Detector Probe on the #2 Engine Inlet. 5) When power is disrupted between the ice detector probe and the ice rate meter the ICE DETECTED caution light will illuminate (i.e..#2 Engine Inlet removed for High Speed Shaft Balance). 6) The only way to clear the caution light during normal operation if the ICE DETECTED caution light illuminates is to energize the blade de-ice system. (g) Blade Deice Test Panel 1) The BLADE DEICE TEST panel provides a check of blade deice system for failures that are not detected during the normal TEST mode. 2) The panel does this by inserting specific failure signals into the system, which should be detected by the built-in-test circuits of the controller. 3) The BLADE DEICE TEST panel also functions to sense faults in the deice power circuits. 4) If electrical power remains applied to either the main or tail rotor heating elements after a FAIL condition, or when blade deice power is switched off, the BLADE DEICE TEST panel causes the corresponding PWR monitor indicator to go on. 5) When the BLADE DEICE TEST panel switch is placed to the NORM position, the test panel permits normal system operation. 6) The main rotor synchronization fail detection circuits are tested when the BLADE DEICE TEST panel switch is placed to SYNC 1 or SYNC 2. 7) The test panel provides the controller with a -30 V dc pulse when the mode switch is at SYNC 1, and presents an open circuit with switch at SYNC 2, which causes the MR DEICE FAIL capsule to illuminate. 8) A short-circuited OAT sensor is simulated, and fails detection circuits in main and tail rotor channels are tested when the BLADE DEICE TEST panel switch is placed to the OAT position. 24 9) The main blade and tail blade fail detect circuits sense the simulated failure and cause the MR DEICE FAIL and TR DEICE FAIL caution capsules to go on. 10) When the BLADE DEICE TEST panel switch is placed to the EOT, faulty Element-On-Timers are simulated in the main and tail channels and their associated failure detection circuits are tested, which causes the MR DEICE FAIL and TR DEICE FAIL caution capsules are turned on. 11) The PWR MAIN RTR lamp on the BLADE DEICE TEST panel is turned on if the POWER switch on the BLADE DEICE control panel is OFF, or a main blade deice fail signal is generated by the controller, which is a warning that the main rotor blade heater power has not been turned off as required. 12) The tail rotor power monitor circuit monitors the three-phase ac voltage to the tail rotor heating elements. 13) If voltage is present on at least two phases and the POWER switch on the BLADE DEICE control panel is OFF, or the controller generates a tail rotor deice fail signal the PWR TAIL RTR lamp is turned on, warning that the tail rotor blade heater power has not been turned off as required. (h) Blade Deice Control Panel 1) The BLADE DEICE Control Panel allows the pilot to energize, test, and control the functions of the blade Deice system. 25 2) The OFF position turns off deice system. 3) The ON position turns on power to blade deice controller and causes the ICE DETECTED caution to disappear. 4) The TEST position electrically tests the main and tail rotor deice system for one test cycle. 5) TEST IN PROGRESS green light illuminates during test cycle. 6) At end of test cycle, light should go off. 7) The system off-time is controlled by ice rate signal when the Mode Selector Switch is in the AUTO position. 8) The MANUAL position gives the pilot manual control of system off-time. 9) The T sets a fixed element-off-time for trace icing. 10) The L sets a fixed element-off-time for light icing. 11) The M sets a fixed element-off-time for moderate icing. (i) No. 1 Junction Box 1) The Mission Readiness Circuit Breaker Panel is attached to the No. 1 Junction Box, which contains the No. 2 AC Primary Bus ICE-DET circuit breaker, the No. 2 DC Primary Bus DEICE CNTRLR and ICE DET circuit breakers, and the No. 1 AC Primary Bus DEICE PWR TAIL ROTOR circuit breaker. (j) No. 2 Junction Box 26 1) The No. 2 Junction Box contains three 50 amp blade deice current limiters (CL 7, 8 and 9). (k) Auxiliary AC Junction Box 1) The Auxiliary AC Junction Box contains K62 (Main rotor blade deice contactor), current limiters 10, 11, and 12 (50 AMP) for main rotor blade deice system. 2) The Auxiliary AC Junction Box also contains K63 (tail rotor contactor), K61 (tail rotor blade deice contactor) and current limiters 13, 14, and 15 (20 AMP) for the tail rotor deice system. 27 (l) Main Rotor Deice Junction Box 1) The Main Rotor Deice Junction Box contains K60 (main rotor blade deice contactor), K64 (APU/generator interlock relay), K65 (back-up pump interlock relay) and T14 and T14A (main rotor blade deice current transformers). b. Rotor Deice Power Distribution (1) 28 V dc from the No. 2 DC Primary Bus is applied through the DEICE CNTRLR circuit breaker, on the mission readiness circuit breaker panel, as follows: to the blade deice controller, as power supply voltage; through de-energized contacts of ac bus tie contactor and energized contacts of APU/external power contactor, energized No. 1 and No. 2 generator contactors, to the blade deice controller power monitor circuits; to the BLADE 28 DEICE TEST panel as PRESS-TO-TEST lamp voltage; and to the BLADE DEICE control panel POWER switch. (2) If this switch is placed ON, 28 V dc will energize the icing rate meter, the blade deice controller, and relay K64 via diode CR16. (3) If the POWER switch is placed to TEST, 28 V dc will energize relay K64 through diode CR15 and contacts of relay K65, if the backup pump is not operating. (4) This test voltage is also applied to the blade deice controller. (5) No. 2 dc primary voltage is applied through the ICE DET circuit breaker, on the mission readiness circuit breaker panel, to the icing rate meter. (6) 28 V dc from the Battery Bus is applied through the APU GEN CONTR circuit breaker, through normally open or normally closed contacts of No. 1 and No. 2 generator contactors, and energized contacts of relay K64, to energize contactors K62 and K63. (7) Three-phase 115 V ac tail rotor heater power may come from one of two sources: from the No. 1 AC Primary Bus through the DEICE PWR TAIL ROTOR circuit breaker and normally open contacts of contactor K63, or from the APU generator through normally closed contacts of contactor K63. (8) From contactor K63, power is routed through current limiters CL13, CL14, and CL15, contacts of contactor K61, and fault detection circuitry within the blade deice controller, to the tail rotor slip rings. (9) Three-phase 115 V ac main rotor heater power may come from one of two sources: from the No. 2 AC Primary Bus through current limiters CL7, CL8, and CL9, and normally open contacts of contactor K62 or from the APU generator through normally closed contacts of contactor K62. (10) From contactor K62, power is routed through current limiters CL10, CL11, and CL12, contacts of contactor K60, and MN RTR BLADE DEICE CT transformers T14 and T14A, to the main rotor slip rings. (11) Single-phase 115 V ac for the BLADE DEICE TEST panel and the ice rate meter is supplied by the No. 2 AC Primary Bus via the ICE DET circuit breaker. 29 c. Main Rotor Operation (1) When the POWER switch on the Blade Deice Control Panel is placed to the ON position, the output of the main rotor power monitor enables the main rotor contactor driver inside the Blade Deice Controller to energize the main rotor blade deice contactor K60 through the contacts of relay K64. (2) 28 V dc from the Blade Deice Controller energizes K60, which will supply 115 V ac, threephase power to the distributor through current transformers T14 and T14A, and the main rotor slip rings. (3) The controller now begins a normal main rotor cycle. (4) The eight Element-On-Time heating control pulses used to step the stepping relays in the distributor are generated by the main blade Element-On-Timer of the blade deice controller. (5) The EOT distributor drive pulses that are applied to the input control logic circuit inside the Main Rotor Blade Distributor sends a signal to the stepping relays and enables the input control logic circuits in the blade deice controller. (6) Sync information is derived from the stepping relays and a sync forming circuit. (7) This provides a negative output pulse of 5 volts for position 1, and 30 volts for positions 3, 5, and 7. 30 (8) Positions 2, 4, 6, and 8 are sensed by zero volts on the sync pulse input line. d. Main Rotor Operation (Synchronization) (1) If the main rotor distributor is not in its proper reference position, 28 V dc power is applied to the deice controller from the TEST position of the BLADE DEICE control panel POWER switch, and the main rotor channel enters the synchronization mode. (2) During this time the distributor driver delivers a series of short pulses (375 milliseconds) to step the distributor to a reference position. (3) During synchronization, the controller monitors the sync pulse input signal from the distributor, to check for synchronization and proper sequencing. (4) The distributor will provide a -3 to -7 volt reference signal to the controller when the stepping relay is in position for deicing to start. (5) If the reference signal is not present, the controller continues to generate pulses (to a maximum of eight) to advance a stepping relay in the distributor. (6) If the -3 to -7 volt sync signal is not received within the first eight-pulse cycle, the controller generates a main blade deice fail signal, which turns on the MR DEICE FAIL capsule. 31 (7) If the reference signal is present a no-fail signal from the main blade fail/fault detect circuit is applied to the main rotor power monitor and main rotor de-icing will begin. e. Tail Rotor Operation (1) With the POWER switch ON, 28 V dc energizes the ON command input of the blade deice controller tail rotor power monitor circuit. (2) The tail rotor power monitor is enabled because the ON input is present, and a no-fail signal from the fail detect circuit enables the power monitor. (3) The output of the tail rotor contactor driver energizes K61. (4) The pulse width of the timer signal is a function of the outside air temperature (OAT) through the deice controller. (5) The colder the temperature the greater the pulse width. (6) The timer output pulse (EOT) enables and energizes the heat control contactor in the controller. (7) Heating power is connected through the tail rotor slip rings to the tail rotor blade heating elements. (8) The time between EOT cycles is determined by the icing rate signal and applied to the tail deice integrator. 32 (9) The output of the integrator controls the operation of the tail rotor Element-On-Timer.
