Investigating Homogeneous and Heterogeneous
Mixtures
Objective:
- To identify and differentiate between homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures.
- To observe the physical properties of mixtures.
Materials:
- Clear plastic cups or beakers (6)
- Water
- Salt
- Sugar
- Cooking oil
- Sand
- Pebbles
- Spoon or stirrer
Procedure:
1. Prepare each mixture in a separate cup.
2. Stir the components thoroughly.
3. Observe each mixture:
- Is it uniform throughout? (Homogeneous)
- Can you see the different parts? (Heterogeneous)
4. Record your observations in the table below.

Guide Questions:
1. Which mixtures looked the same throughout?
2. Which mixtures had visible parts?
3. What is the key difference between homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures?
4. Why do some substances dissolve in water while others do not?
