The Interior of
the Earth

Grade 6
Introduction
• Earth looks solid from outside, but
inside it has many layers
• These layers are made of rocks and
metals
• The deeper we go, the hotter it gets!
The Crust
• The crust is the outermost layer
• It’s thin and made of rocks and soil
• It’s where we live, along with plants
and animals
• Picture idea: Picture of mountains,
continents, and oceans with arrows
pointing to the “crust”
The Mantle
• The mantle lies under the crust
• It’s made of hot, melted rock called
magma
• When magma comes out of
volcanoes, it’s called lava!
The Outer Core
• The outer core is made of melted iron
and nickel
• It’s very, very hot!
• The moving metals here help create
Earth’s magnetic field
The Inner Core
• The inner core is the deepest part
• It’s made of solid iron and nickel
• Even though it is super hot, pressure
keeps it solid!
Summary
• Earth has four main layers : Crust,
Mantle, Outer Core, and Inner Core
• Each layer is different in materials,
temperature, and thickness
• These layers make Earth strong and
full of energy!
