Introduction to Earth Science
Earth Science is the study of the Earth, its structure, processes, history, and its place
in the universe. It includes four main branches: Geology, Oceanography, Meteorology,
and Astronomy. Each branch focuses on different aspects of Earth and its interactions
with natural forces.
1.1 Geological Science (Geology)
Geology is the study of the Earth's solid materials, including rocks, minerals, and the
processes by which they change over time. Geologists explore Earth's history, plate
tectonics, volcanoes, earthquakes, and the formation of mountains.
1.2 Oceanography
Oceanography is the scientific study of oceans, including marine organisms, ocean
currents, waves, and geological structures under the sea. Oceanographers study how
oceans influence weather, climate, and life on Earth.
1.3 Meteorology
Meteorology is the study of the atmosphere and weather. Meteorologists study clouds,
storms, rainfall, winds, temperature, and how atmospheric conditions change over
time.
1.4 Astronomy
Astronomy is the study of the universe beyond Earth, including the sun, moon,
planets, stars, galaxies, and other celestial bodies. Astronomers explore how the
universe formed and how celestial objects interact.
