DIABETES MONITOR AND
RELEVANT TECHNOLOGIES
Understanding, Prevention & Management

The Role of Tech: Diagnosis & Monitoring
The Dual Goals of Technology:
1. Diagnosis: Identifying if a person has
diabetes. (Typically done in a clinical
setting).
2. Monitoring: Helping patients manage
their blood glucose levels daily.
(Typically done at home).
Why it Matters: Technology helps
quantify these metrics, providing accurate
data for doctors' decisions and patient
self-management, ultimately aiming to
prevent serious complications.
2
Personal Monitoring Technology
Blood Glucose Meter (BGM):
Technology: Electrochemical
sensors on disposable test strips.
How it works: The user pricks
their fingertip; blood reacts with
an enzyme on the strip, creating
a small electrical signal that the
meter reads and converts to a
glucose level.
Limitations: Provides only a
"snapshot" at one point in time;
requires multiple, often painful,
fingerpricks.

The Future of Diabetes Technology
The Goal: To measure blood
glucose without any skin
punctures (no pricks, no
sensors).
Technologies Under Research:
Spectroscopy: Using light
(e.g.,
infrared)
passed
through the skin.
Sensors via sweat, tears:
(e.g., Smart contact lenses).
Electromagnetic
(RF)
waves.
