Objective:
PART I.

News Writing Assignment
To develop a news story based upon an event or assignment #3
Pick one out of three options below:
Assignment (Option #1): Write a hard news story based on an
event on Campus or happening in New York City. Make sure to
conduct a minimum of three interviews to substantiate the story,
i.e. obtain quote from a professor, an expert on a particular subject
matter and an event organizer. Your story should be accompanied
by a headline, dek and byline and some sort of visual element (s).
Your story should contain a lead
(summary or creative lead), nut graph, quotes, background
information, and a kicker.
Assignment (Option #2): Write a news story based on
interview assignment #3. Make sure to conduct a minimum of
three interviews to substantiate the story. Your story should be
accompanied by a headline, dek and byline and some sort of visual
element (s). Your story should contain a lead (summary or creative
lead), nut graph, quotes, background information, and a kicker.
Assignment (Option #3): Write a soft news/feature story. Your
story should be accompanied by a headline, dek and byline and
some sort of visual element (s). Your story should contain a lead
(summary or creative lead), nut graph, quotes, background
information, and a kicker.
All stories MUST contain primary (and secondary) information. A
minimum of three interviews to be included. Direct quote all three
interviews.
The story should be 500 words. Proper attribution of quotes is
expected. No need for transcripts.
PART II.
Critical Analysis
Explain your approach to writing the story. Identify the type of
story it is, i.e. hard news or feature. Focus on why your approach
was the most effective way to put the story together. Discuss how
you determined your sources and why the people you interviewed

were the best for the story. How did you determine the display
type? Be thorough in both your approach and your analysis.
The analysis should be 250 words.
Reminder:
1. Make sure to layout the article as it would appear for
publication. Submit the layout as a PDF.
2. Send a word document of the article (500 words) and analysis.
Make sure to use AP Style Guide for formatting. Must have a
minimum of three interviews and a secondary source (i.e. stats,
press release, website). Must include wordcount.
3. Include a message planner outline.
4. Include a Critical Analysis of your work (250 words)
All assignments must be typed and include a cover sheet. Please
check spelling and grammar usage. You are responsible for getting
this assignment in on time
