Tutorial [1]
Analysis & Design of Unrestrained Beams
PROBLEM [1]
Find the required Universal Beam (UB) section in S275 steel for a 12m span simply
supported beam that is unrestrained along its full length, considering the following
loads and conditions
Beams Spacing: 3.5m intervals.
Loads:
o Solid Concrete Slab: 220mm thick (Concrete density: 2400 kg/m 3.)
o Finishes Load: 2 kN/m2.
o Imposed Load: 5 kN/m2.
The solution must verify the adequacy of the section by checking the design bending
moment, the design shear force and the ultimate Lateral Torsional Buckling resistance,
which requires first calculating the Elastic Critical Moment.
PROBLEM [2]
Select a suitable UB in S275 steel to carry a pair of point loads transferred by cross-beams as
shown in the accompanying sketch.
Note: The cross-beams may reasonably be assumed to provide full lateral and torsional
restraint at B and C; assume further that ends A and D are similarly restrained.
