Understanding the OSI Reference Model through Research and
Group Presentation
The purpose of this lab is to develop a deep understanding of the seven layers of the OSI
model, the protocols and devices associated with each layer, and their role in data
communication. This will build the foundation for future networking concepts such as IP
addressing, routing, and network troubleshooting.
Learning Objectives
By completing this lab, you will be able to:
1. Describe the functions of all seven OSI layers in detail.
2. Identify protocols, devices, and data formats that operate at each OSI layer.
3. Explain the encapsulation process as data moves down the OSI stack and
de-encapsulation as it moves up.

4. Use real-world examples to map network problems to specific OSI layers
(troubleshooting).
5. Work collaboratively in groups to research, prepare, and deliver technical
presentations.
Materials Required
● Textbooks:
○ Data and Computer Communications by William Stallings 10th Edition- Chapter
1&2
○ Computer Networking: A Top-Down Approach (Kurose & Ross) – Chapter 2
○ CCNA 200-301 Official Cert Guide (Wendell Odom) – Part I (Networking
Fundamentals)
○ Computer Networks (Andrew Tanenbaum) – OSI Reference Model section
● Software & Tools:
○ Cisco Packet Tracer (for optional demonstrations)
○ Microsoft PowerPoint / Google Slides (for group presentations)
Background Theory
The OSI (Open Systems Interconnection) model is a conceptual framework that standardizes
the functions of a communication system into seven distinct layers:
1. Physical Layer – Deals with the physical medium of data transmission (cables,
connectors, signals).
2. Data Link Layer – Ensures reliable data transfer between directly connected nodes
(switches, MAC addresses, frames).
3. Network Layer – Provides logical addressing and routing (IP, routers).
4. Transport Layer – Ensures reliable delivery of data (TCP, UDP, ports).
5. Session Layer – Manages sessions and dialogues between applications.
6. Presentation Layer – Translates data formats, encryption, compression (JPEG, SSL).
7. Application Layer – Interfaces directly with users and applications (HTTP, FTP, SMTP).

The model is not a protocol itself but a guide for understanding how protocols and devices
interact in a layered approach.
Lab Activities
Part A: Individual Library Research
1. Visit the university library and study the OSI reference model from at least two
textbooks listed above.
2. Prepare a summary document (1–2 pages) that covers:
○ The 7 layers of the OSI model (top-down).
○ At least 2 real-world examples per layer (e.g., Ethernet = Data Link, IP =
Network, TCP = Transport).
○ One troubleshooting scenario linked to each layer. Example:
■ Physical Layer: “Cable unplugged → No signal.”
■ Network Layer: “Incorrect IP address → No connectivity.”
3. Save your summary as a PDF and upload it to Moodle.
Part B: Group Presentation
1. Form groups of 6 students.
2. Each group will be assigned specific OSI layer which will led to two groups sharing a
Layer (creating some sort of competition):
3. Each group must prepare a 6-minute presentation that includes:
○ Explanation of the assigned layer(s).
○ Protocols and devices used at that layer.

○ Example scenario of how the layer operates in real-world communication.
○ One common troubleshooting problem related to the assigned layer.
4. Submit your presentation slides to Moodle before the lab session.
Deliverables
● Individual:
○ 1–2 page OSI summary (PDF).
● Group:
○ Presentation slides (PPT/Google Slides/presentation software).
○ 6-minute oral presentation during lab.
Expected Outcomes
After completing this lab, you should:
● Be able to clearly explain all OSI layers and their functions.
● Recognize which protocols and devices operate at each layer.
● Relate real-world networking problems to the appropriate OSI layer.
● Gain confidence in presenting technical content.
