TERMINOLOGY OF ANIMAL SCIENCE
Introduction
Animal science is simply the study of domestic animals in general. From conception
to death, behavior to management, physiology to nutrition, reproduction to product
distribution, encompasses all aspects. Animal science is an accumulation of
information that began with the observations of hunter-gatherers who began the
process of domestication a long time ago. Each profession, industry, and vocation
have terms that are unique to it. Animal producers use words and phrases that are
understandable and certain terms are unique to the husbandry of specific species.
Emphasis is placed on terms used in the production of food-producing mammals.
Since subject matter covering various aspects of animal production is presented in
other textbooks, meaningful to others in the same or similar fields of interest but, in
some cases, not intelligible to those in other professions and vocations, (Putnam,
1991).
Objectives:
This laboratory activity aims to present definitions and explanations that describe the
meaning of the words and phrases widely used by those involved in some phases of
animal production, animal product processing, or in servicing the animal industries.
Specifically,
1. To identify the different terminologies used in Animal Science;
2. To familiarize and appreciate the different terminologies in Animal Science;
and
3. To exercise identifying farm animals using Animal Science terminology.
Methodology
Animal Science Terminologies
Search and identify the different terminologies used in Animal Science and give their
meaning and definitions.
Questions
1. What is the importance of determining the different terminologies?
2. How useful is it in exercising good animal husbandry practices?
