Assignment #2
What I Hope to Gain from College
With the long 4-year venture I am about to go on, I know there are going to be boundless
opportunities and experiences for me to take advantage of. This includes making meaningful
connections with professors, working hard to grow my proficiency in all aspects of music,
making lifelong friends, collaborating to learn new and different perspectives, and developing
good habits and study skills. From what I can tell, the difference in resources between high
school and college is enormous. Because of this, I very much felt held back by my environment
in high school. Having less independence in my life at home and at school was very frustrating
for me and I often felt I could go way further if the circumstances were different. This led me to
be very excited about what college has to offer in terms of being an adult and having the freedom
to choose what I’d like to do with my career and life. In other words, college has given me the
hope that I’ll be able to grow into the person I want to be.
Along with looking at what I hope to gain from college, I am also looking at what I can
bring to college. This primarily consists of helping a friend academically or socially, joining
fundraising events, and sharing my unique perspective with others on campus. I love getting to
know people on a deep level, so if a friend of mine ever needs help with something, I’m always
more than happy to lend a hand. This carries over to my newly developed interest in joining a
fraternity. I’ve been getting to know the people in Alpha Tau Omega and my interest in the
fraternity has only grown since I learned about the fundraising events they partake in. Everyone
here at Stetson has been wonderful so far, and I think it’s important to give back the kindness
you receive in one way or another. I can understand when people have very strong views on
certain things, but I don’t think people should ever show hate, disgust, or apathy towards
someone simply because of differing views. I’ve come to learn that the fact we all come from
such different backgrounds is ultimately a net positive and as long as no one is inciting harm, we
should always listen to what others have to say.
