Senapathy Centre for Computing Resources General Instructions for connecting to LAN Connect the LAN cable from the wall socket (I/O) to your Laptop / Desktop If your laptop doesn't have a LAN port (RJ45), use USB to Ethernet (RJ45) adapter for a reliable wired connection. Press the Windows logo key + R / search to open the Run dialog. Type ncpa.cpl and hit Enter. 1 It will open the Network Connections window. Right-click the network adapter Ethernet to disable IPv6 and then select Properties. In order to Disable IPv6, uncheck the box next to Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6). In the same network adapter. Look at the ipv4 option and double click it. It will show two options. Make sure that 1st option is selected. If it is selected 2nd option, change it to 1st option. 2 Go to the command prompt / terminal on your system. A black screen (window) will open. Type ipconfig for windows and ifconfig for Linux and press enter. It will display some outputs. Look at the IPV4 address. If it’s in the series of 10.22.xxx.xx (Hostel Zone) then you’re getting the correct network IP address. If it is displayed as “media disconnected” then check with any other LAN cable. If the IP address is displayed as above then try the below command: ping netaccess.iitm.ac.in The output should be like this: 64 bytes from 10.24.9.61: icmp_seq=1 ttl=63 time=0.287 ms 64 bytes from 10.24.9.61: icmp_seq=2 ttl=63 time=0.303 ms Then the network is fine. Click OK. 3 Then follow the below steps: To access external sites like google, yahoo, etc., you need to login the netaccess.iitm.ac.in every day using your LDAP credentials and approve for 1 day. Make sure while approving netaccess, check the IP Address should be your system IP address 10.22.xxx.yyy If it is not as above, check the proxy settings on your browser. Kindly remove the proxy by selecting no proxy. If you want to find whether proxy is enabled in the browser or not just login to “netaccess.iitm.ac.in” page using your LDAP credentials. If the IP is 10.24.4.222 then proxy is enabled. Disable it and refresh the netaccess page. You will get your system IP Address. Approve and authorize the IP. If you still experience any trouble kindly revert back to us with your system mac address, room no., hostel name and contact mobile no. and the output of the above commands and send these details through email to “helpdesknetworks@iitm.ac.in”. 4 To find system mac address: Go to the command prompt / terminal on your system. Type getmac -v for windows and then press enter. You will see the mac address (Ethernet physical address) in the form of 12 digits (alphanumeric). STUDENTS SHOULD FOLLOW THE BELOW RULES TO GET A GOOD NETWORK : ❖ Students should use the CAT6 patch cord to connect the LAN and the picture is given below. ❖ Be gentle, while connecting the LAN port in the wall socket. Otherwise, it will damage. Handle it gently to maintain a stable connection. ❖ Routers from outside are not permitted for use in Hostel zone. 5
