Teaching design
(Book5 Unit 4 What can you do? Part A)
Good morning, distinguished judges and teachers, it’s my great honor to stand
here and share my teaching design with all of you. The lesson I will present is “Unit 4
What can you do? Part A” taken from PEP primary English book 5. The topic of this
period is “Show our talents and skills”.
1. Teaching theoretical basis
In order to design my teaching plan well. I read the following teaching
theoretical basis. According to the English curriculum standard(2022) and the core
competencies of English, my teaching will try to focus on students’ life long
development and educational creation. That means, during the lessons, students will
learn to understand the knowledge, apply the language and finally create changes.
2.Unit design
At the very beginning. I will briefly introduce this unit concept. The topic of this
unit is talents and skills. There are five periods. The educational significance deepens
lesson by lesson. In the end, students will learn that what we do best is the fittest.
3.Expected output for this unit
Here is the expected output for this unit. At the end of the unit, students will be
able to introduce them like this.
4.Unit map
This is the unit map. I present it before and after each lesson.
Now, I'm going to introduce the first lesson in details from the following
perspectives: (Teaching background analysis, Teaching aim, teaching assessment,
teaching procedures and the reflection.)
5.Analysis of teaching background
Okay, let’s come to the first part, the analysis of teaching background.
5.1 Teaching material analysis
To begin with, let’s look at the teaching material. Considering the big concept, I
set the topic of this lesson as “Show our own talents and skills”. Then I reconstruct
the dialogue, setting the scene as preparation for the festival opening ceremony. With
the help of the related language points, students can learn to show their own talents
and contribute to the collective.
5.2 Students analysis
Without a doubt, students’ participation is indispensable to achieve the teaching
effects. So let's talk about the analysis of students.
Based on the KWLS strategy, I think about “What they know”, “What they
wonder”, “What they learned” and “What they still want to know”. Therefore, I focus
1
on the communication with them and arrange more interesting and useful activities to
arouse their learning passion.
6.Teaching aim
According to the teaching background, I set the teaching aims as follows:
( 1. Learn and understand: Perceive and obtain the general idea of the dialogue.
Recognize the new vocabularies and sentences.
2. Apply and practice: Answer questions based on the text information.
Classify the talents and skills.
3. Transfer and create: Communication according to the sentence structure.
Do a survey to prepare for the opening ceremony.)
Considering the activity-based English learning approach, I arrange the aims
from basically three aspects, each of which connects to others. Then I set the learning
and applying part as the key points of this lesson. And the transfer and creation will be
the difficult point.
7.Teaching assessment
According to the teaching aims, I set the teaching assessment as follows:
Self-assessment, peer-assessment, teacher’s assessment and overall assessment. The
teaching system I apply is the integration of teaching and evaluation. I set three A
sections to achieve it. They are aim, approach and assessment.
Let’s take a closer look at the 3 “A” system. For the purpose to develop students’
ability of listening, speaking, reading and writing, we should also pay attention to the
connections of each sections. Connected to the aim and assessment, the approach
contains a logical question chain. Based on students’ cognitive law, this question
chain can help students to learn the lesson step by step.
8.Teaching procedures
Here comes the most important part of my presentation—my teaching procedure.
There are 5 steps in total, including 15 activities.
Step 1 Warm up & Lead in
Activity 1 Read and find
In this part, I will present a school calender to guide students into the scene.
They can know that, in this unit, there will be a Sports and art festival.
Activity 2 Watch and say
Then the students can watch a video about opening ceremony and get to know
different talents and skills in different subjects.
Teacher’s talk:
“Boys and girls, the Sports and Art Festival is coming. Let’s take a look!
Wow, how amazing! What will we have? Yes. We will have an opening ceremony.
And what is it? Oh, it’s a big celebration. What else? Great job! We can preform it in
three ways, art, music and sports.”
Step 2 Revision & Preparation
Activity 3 Read and guess
2
Then I will present a real and natural learning environment for students. Students
can read the pictures, guess “who is helping?” and “what can they do?”
Activity 4 Watch and choose
After watching the video of Zhang Peng, students can learn the first phrase—
sing English songs.
Activity 5&6 Sing a song & Think and say
Then, students can naturally sing an English song about talents and skills. And
they can think of their own talents and review the knowledge. In this way, I can
cultivate students’ learning interest and prepare for the following study.
Step 3 Presentation
Activity 7 Listen and tick
While reading the following dialogue, students can learning more talents in
different subjects.
Activity 8&9 Listen and imitate & Role play
In this part, students will be divided as a group of four. They get familiar with the
sentence patterns when they do the role play. Meanwhile, the assessment may help
them improve their presentation.
Step 4 Practice
Activity 10 Read and find out
After that, students have the ability to read the last dialogue by themselves and
learn to find the keys words.
Activity 11 Think and discuss
In this part, students can think about the speakers’ inner voice and aware of more
possibilities.
Teacher’s talk:
“Boys and girls, let’s think about it. Why does Chen Jie want to play the pipa?
Wonderful. Maybe she likes playing the pipa. Excellent! She may want to try. Or she
can play the pipa well. How about Sarah? You may discuss in groups”
Activity 12 Retell the dialogue
Finally, students can retell the dialogue and summarize children’s talents and
skills.
Step 5 Extension&Summary
Activity 13 Do a survey
For extensions, students can walk around the class and do a survey for the
opening ceremony. They can create a new conversation and know more about
classmates. I think this is a good way for students to consolidate the knowledge
further.
Activity 14 Think and discuss
At last, I set this part for students to think of more ways to do contribution, even
without any talents. We can still make efforts for the festival.
Activity 15 Summary
I will briefly restate what we have learned today. This unit map is a bridge for
students to memorize what they learned from this lesson and prepare for next lesson.
9.Homework
3
At the end of the lesson, I’ll assign the following as students’ homework which
can help my students put their newly acquired knowledge into practice beyond class.
10.Blackboard design
This is the blackboard design. As you can see. I design the key sentences on the
left. And classify the key words in three kinds of subject. It's simple but clear for
students.
11.Teaching reflection
Generally speaking, my lesson is quite successful based on students’ brilliant
performance in each activity and it really helps them cultivate their core competencies.
There are four highlights, including the question chain, the integration of teaching
evaluation, the activity-based approach and the integration of English with other
disciplines. But still, I think I should give more time for students to internalize and
create.
That’s all for my lesson. Thank you for listening.
