Salient points:
Neo Behaviorism
Tolman’s Purposive Behaviorism
Bandura’s Social Learning Theory
Realization:
Neo-behaviorism had taught me about the new perspective in
behaviorism that helps students to have the ability to empower their
learning. Sign Learning Theory by Edward Tolman, on the other hand,
focuses on how we must see the meaning in everything we learn. As
it says, “learning must always have a goal." We look into learning as
goal-directed and see them giving purpose to our learning process. I
have thought of how organisms behave in ways like Tolman presented
in intervening variables. Social Learning Theory by Albert Bandura
made me realize that what the learners see on their teacher is more
likely to copy them. It gave me a deeper understanding as to why
teachers are very careful with their words and the things that they share
in their classes. Learners perceive them as the truth and will eventually
bring them to their higher level of education until they can finally
understand the concept deeper.
Application:
By understanding the mediating variables and goal-directed
aspects of behavior, teachers can come up with effective strategies that
can give the students the motivation and drive to make their learning
meaningful, bit by bit. These principles can give us a glimpse of what
it is like to deepen our understanding of how our students behave and
eventually create more worthwhile interventions in our classroom.
Salient Points:
Mental Processes and products of perception
Perceptual Skills/Process
Gestalt Principles
Realization:
As a learner and future educator, gestalt psychology has given
me insights into the learning experience by making the different
concepts connect with each other. It gave me the thought of how I can
use this lesson to increase the learner’s motivation and engagement in
my class. In addition, these principles provide opportunities for me to
write an engaging and effective lesson plan so that I can help my
learners reach their potential.
Application:
Every learner has their own way to perceive and process
information. Thus, these principles can actually help the students to
organize the information given to them in such way that it is visually
pleasing. For instance, using mind maps, charts, and diagrams can be
a factor that encourages active learning for the learners to see how
these concepts are connected.
Salient Points:
Mind: Information Processor
Types of Knowledge
Retrieval of Information
Realization:
Information Processing Theory is the lesson followed by
Gestalt Psychology that also talks about how cognitive processes
influence the way and what we are learning. However, this school of
thought covers the cognitive abilities that involve mental processes in
acquiring, storing, and using the knowledge learned. Through this
lesson, I have discovered that how we think as humans is actually
similar to how a computer processes information. It creates the input
and delivers it eventually and is stored and processed by our mind. I
also realized the importance of repeating information as a form of
containing the information in our mind, which can prevent errors and
improve the reliability of communication systems.
Application:
All of these theories in general can actually help educators to
create learning strategies for their learners, as they are also learning
with them by assessing their behavior, cognitive abilities, and how
they interact with society. And with that, these teaching practices can
show better academic performance and positive learning outcomes.
