First-year university student views in academic writing
Abstract
This research explores first-year university students attitude towards academic
writing, focusing on their challenges and experiences. Using a qualitative study,
ten undergraduate students from a Namibian university were interviewed. The
data were analyzed thematically and revealed three main themes: academic
writing a significant, encountered challenges and how to enhance. Respodents
attested that academic writing plays a great deal towards development of critical
thinking, research and analytical skills. However, they also cited serious difficulty
in grammar, punctuation and citations. In managing challenges, students
employed several techniques, which include getting feedback from lecturers,
using writing resources, and frequent practice. The study emphasizes the
importance of tutorial support systems to help students navigate the complexities
of academic writing. Essentially, the findings emphasizes the importance of
equipping students with the knowledge and tools that will enhance their skills in
academic writing
