What is Latex
Allergy?
Latex allergy is a reaction by the immune
system when a person comes into contact
with natural rubber latex. It can cause skin
irritation, breathing problems, or even a lifethreatening reaction called anaphylaxis in
severe cases.
Sources of Latex
Natural rubber latex (from rubber tree sap)
Common products containing latex:
- Gloves
- Balloons
- Condoms
- Medical devices
- Rubber bands, etc.
Causes & Risk
Factors
Repeated exposure to latex
Healthcare workers, patients with multiple surgeries
People with spina bifida
Cross-reactivity with certain foods (e.g., banana,
avocado, chestnut)
Symptoms of
Latex Allergy
Skin: Rash, itching, redness
Respiratory: Sneezing, runny nose, wheezing
Severe: Anaphylaxis – life-threatening reaction
Prevention of
Latex Allergy
Avoid using products that contain natural rubber latex
Use latex-free gloves and medical supplies (e.g., nitrile
or vinyl gloves)
Inform doctors and dentists about your latex allergy
Create latex-safe zones in hospitals and workplaces
Wear a medical alert bracelet if you have a latex allergy
Avoid foods that cross-react with latex (e.g., banana,
avocado, kiwi – if sensitive)
