AI-POWERED MOBILE MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT: A HUMAN-CENTERED
APPROACH FOR UGANDA
Project Overview:
Mental health challenges are deeply rooted in personal, social, and cultural experiences. In
Uganda, limited access to mental health services, social stigma, and a lack of awareness
prevent individuals from seeking help. This project takes a human-centered approach,
leveraging AI to deeply understand the psychological, emotional, and social needs of
individuals, work colleagues, patients, and the broader community. By providing
personalized, compassionate, and context-aware mental health support, this initiative
aims to improve mental well-being in underserved communities.
Objectives:
1. Deeply Understand Human Needs: Develop AI models trained on localized
cultural, emotional, and psychological factors to offer context-sensitive mental health
support.
2. Enhance Workplace Mental Health: Provide tailored tools for colleagues and
workplaces to improve emotional well-being, stress management, and collaboration.
3. Support Patients with Chronic Illness & Trauma: Offer specialized mental health
support for individuals dealing with physical health conditions, post-traumatic stress,
and grief.
4. Empower Community-Led Mental Health Support: Strengthen peer networks,
traditional support systems, and local health workers with AI-powered insights.
5. Break Stigma & Strengthen Social Bonds: Promote mental well-being through
community engagement, storytelling, and culturally relevant educational content.
Key Features:
AI-Driven Emotional Intelligence Engine: The system will analyse user emotions,
tone, and behavioural patterns to provide tailored responses that reflect deep empathy
and understanding.
Workplace & Team Mental Health Toolkit: AI-powered mood tracking, stressrelief exercises, and workplace mental health insights to help teams build healthier
work environments.
Personalized AI Chatbot for Daily Mental Wellness: A digital assistant offering
self-assessments, coping strategies, and personalized daily mental health check-ins.
Patient centered Mental Health Support: AI-powered mental health modules
tailored for patients dealing with chronic illnesses, trauma, and disability-related
stress.
Crisis Response & Suicide Prevention System: AI-driven risk assessment with realtime connection to crisis helplines and trained professionals.
Community Engagement & Social Connection: Encourage collective healing
through storytelling, shared experiences, and community-driven mental wellness
programs.
USSD & SMS Accessibility: Provide mental health support to users with basic
phones, ensuring inclusivity.
Impact:
By integrating deep understanding of human emotions, workplace dynamics, patient
experiences, and community needs, this project will revolutionize mental health care in
Uganda. The platform will foster emotional resilience, strengthen workplace
relationships, and provide patients with the psychological support they need to heal.
Through AI-driven insights, communities will become more supportive, workplaces more
compassionate, and healthcare more holistic.
Implementation Strategy:
We will collaborate with mental health professionals, employers, hospitals, community
leaders, and NGOs to ensure that the AI system is rooted in real human needs. By engaging
communities in the design and development, we will create a tool that truly understands and
uplifts the people it serves.
