Erikson's Psychosocial Study
According to Potter and Perry, human growth and development are orderly, predictable
processes beginning with conception and continuing until death. Physical growth is the
quantitative, or measurable, aspect of an individual's increase in physical measurements as a
result of an increase in cell number. Development is the qualitative, or behavioral, aspects of
progressive adaptation to the environment.
Up to this day, Erikson is one of the psychoanalysis credited for revolutionary works on different
stages on human development. He has developed a psychosocial theory of emotional
development. This theory looks at the impact of parents and society on personality development
from childhood to adulthood. According to Erikson, each person has to pass through a series of
eight interrelated stages over his entire life cycle. We will look at two of the four stages for early
childhood.
TODDLERS
The first stage we will consider is called Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt or anal stage. This
stage occurs during the toddler years (from one to three years). At this stage the toddler realizes
that he is a separate person with his own desires and abilities. He wants to do things for himself
without help or hindrance from other people. The toddler's favorite word "NO" is a declaration
of independence and a bid for increased autonomy. It is a reflection of being made in the image
of God...with the ability to make choices. This push for autonomy is enhanced by muscular
maturation as the toddler try to use their developing muscles to walk, climb, hop and jump and

With advances in medicine and technology, we are now living longer than ever. To enjoy all of
our later years in the best possible health, we need to understand the aging process and how it
affects our health. According to Erikson's theory of development Older Adults (age 65 and
over) go through a stage called Integrity vs. Despair. During this period of life older adults
experience physiological, psychological, and emotional changes. During this time of life, people
tend to look back over their years and reflect on them. If they appreciate their life and are
