Abstract
This paper developed an algorithm for dynamic traffic assignment. The dynamic traffic
assignment model used for this application used an iterative approach that reassigns flows
to paths on each iteration based on path travel times obtained with a traffic simulation
model. This path travel times and traffic simulator are employed in a method of
successive averages (MSA) to solve the dynamic equilibrium solution of the problem.
The traffic simulation model used in this algorithm is based on cell transmission model
(CTM) of Daganzo with little changes. This formulation satisfies the FIFO condition
through the CTM. The determination of path travel times is the network loading subproblem, which is solved using a numerical method with proper accurate results. The
results showed that this algorithm was capable of capturing dynamic phenomena, such as
shockwaves and queues formation.
