Workshop Two - Adobe CC Intro - InDesign Layout
Workshop Due Date: Week 7, start of class
In this workshop you will create a one-page, black and white document using many
of InDesign’s typographic and layout tools. Your layout will be based on a sample
reference image that will be supplied to you in class.
Some of the skills you will demonstrate in this workshop include:
• Set up an effective template layer in InDesign using an embedded image
• Basic page layout including correct page orientation, guides,
threaded text frames
• Import text from a separate Microsoft Word document
• Manually enter text directly into InDesign
• Place and scale images in an InDesign layout
• Customize frames using Stroke, Fill and the Drop Shadow effect
• Utilize InDesign’s Step and Repeat feature as well as the Align panel
• Print to a networked classroom printer
• Prepare an InDesign document for output using the Package option
• Place a grayscale photograph in the layout. Adjust the tones of the photograph for optimal reproduction.
You will be given a Printed sample of the finished layout. Using the sample as a guide, your challenge will be to
create a new InDesign document that matches the layout of the original as closely as you can. We will work on portions
of this together in class, but you will also need to work outside of class to complete everything.
You will also be provided with image files — a Creative Cloud graphic, Creative Cloud logo in Illustrator (.AI) format.
You must provide a professional picture of yourself that will be good quality and high-resolution.
File set-up and software demonstration will be provided in class. The final file should be constructed as demonstrated
in class, with an emphasis on layer naming and organization, file structure, correct text-frame usage, text and image
formatting, and correct output and printing of final files.
Procedure:
Create a new InDesign document:
Size: 8.5 X 11 inches
Margin Guides: Top 0.5in, Bottom 0.8in, Left 0.5in, Right 0.5in
File name: studentname_workshop-01.indd
Fonts: Adobe Garamond Pro and Myriad Pro
Place the provided layout sample as a template in your layout.
The body copy has been provided as a text file. Make note of all the special characters that appear in the content.
Use File > Place… to flow the text into your InDesign layout. The body copy text should thread through the two main
text frames in the document. You will create additional text frames that will hold the main headline, sub-heads, and PDF
workflow chart.

Ensure that Auto-Hyphenation is disabled throughout the document.
Manually type all of the remaining text directly into text frames in the layout.
Replace the Instructor’s name/credentials at the bottom of the document with your own.
Style the text in the main Headers, sub-headers, body copy, PDF workflow chart and all additional elements to match
the provided sample. Match the fonts, styles, sizes and layout of the printed sample as closely as you can.
Hint: There are EN dash characters ( – ) and EM dash characters used throughout this assignment.
To create an EN dash, hold down the option key while pressing the hyphen key.
To create an EM dash, hold down shift + option while pressing the hyphen key.
Additional special characters ( trademark and copyright symbols) can be found using the Glyphs panel.
Replace the placeholder photograph in the sample with a B&W picture of yourself. We will convert the photo colour in
class together. Adjust the tones of the image so that it reproduces well on the classroom printer.
Use InDesign’s Line tool and the arrowhead function (in the Stroke panel) to create arrowheads.
Presentation:
• Using InDesign’s “Package” option, create a new folder named studentname_workshop-02 and save the
following items into the folder:
- InDesign Document/IDML File
- Linked Graphics
- All Fonts used in the Document
- Hi-Res PDF showing all printers marks
- Low-Res “clean” PDF (No printers marks visible)
• Zip and upload your “Packaged” project to the drop-box that has been assigned to your group.
• Print the completed document on an 8.5 x 11 inch sheet of plain paper.
• Place the print in a 9 X 12 inch envelope.
• Neatly print your name on the outside of the envelope.
You will be graded on:
Technical merit — Did you follow all of the instructions? Did you format all the text and copy correctly?
Accuracy — Correct measurement and font usage.
Presentation — package organization, labeled correctly, and uploaded properly.
This workshop, is worth 5% of your final mark in this course. The final workshop files must be submitted at the published
deadline. Late submissions will be graded according to the late submission policy.
