EARL CLYDE O. BALINGIT BSCE 4-4 DECEMBER 21, 2024 REACTION PAPER FOR REPORTER NO.2 (midterms) This paper will discuss what Group 2 discussed during their reporting before midterm examinations and how well they delivered the information from the writer’s perspective. To start with, the group’s topic was Construction Project Organization. According to their discussion, to which the reporter Harris Arrizala specifically mentioned that a construction project, sometimes referred to as a ‘project’, is the organized process of constructing, renovating, refurbishing, retrofitting or adapting a building, or other infrastructures. From this explanation of Harris alone and the way he expounded it, I can say that as a listener, was able to digest every piece of information throughout their reporting as they started strong with their introduction of the topic. As someone who had a hint of their topic before they started reporting, I have to admit I was confused between Structural Organization and Organizational Structure, I initially thought they were the same thing. However, to my surprise, they are not and I appreciate that they cleared the confusion before they went deeper into their discussion. According to them, on one hand, Structural Organization focuses primarily on the arrangement of physical elements such as buildings, equipment and facilities. Its Purpose was to optimize efficiency, safety, and functionality within a physical space. Its examples are the layout of a factory floor, the design of a hospital ward, or the arrangement of furniture in an office. On the other hand, Organizational structure focuses with the arrangement of people and their roles within an organization. Its purpose is to To define the hierarchy, communication channels, and decision-making processes. Its examples are Functional structure (based on departments), divisional structure (based on product lines or regions), matrix structure (combining functional and divisional), and network structure (a loose network of interconnected units). But, as per the reporters, they do have similarities. Both involve the systematic arrangement of components and they both contribute to the overall efficiency of an organization. To dig deeper into their discussion, they explained that Structural organization refers to how a company is arranged to ensure all activities work together efficiently. It provides a framework that helps coordinate tasks, roles, and responsibilities to achieve the company’s goals. Additionally, they highlighted how this structure connects different parts of the organization both vertically (from higher management to lower levels) and horizontally (across various departments or teams). It helps ensure everyone knows their role and how they fit into the bigger picture of the company’s strategy. They added that Structural Organization follows the 5Ms rule (Men, Materials, Machine, Methods, and Money). Organizational Structure was discussed thoroughly by them by enumerating and differentiating the three main types of project organizations: Functional, Project/Taskforce, and Matrix. They explained that an organizational structure consists of specialist or functional departments where authority rests with the functional heads; staff members are divided into groups according to their specialized knowledge. They added that an organizational structure that focuses on projects; derives its name from the fact that they are built to do project work. Finally, they discussed that a matrix is considered the most effective structure for implementing and managing projects. Overall, the whole discussion was an interactive one and we meaningfully absorbed the knowledge they shared with us during their reporting. I have to highlight that they also made the discussion fun by having everyone join their icebreaker which definitely relaxed our minds from the straight discussions. Finally, at the end of the discussion, they summarized their reports and induced upon us the importance of structural organization and Organizational structure so we may not forget it, and I have to say, that it was one of the most important things that should be done during reporting as it helps retaining the knowledge into our memory.
