Professional - usually focuses on one thing. - uses skill, may or may not have people under them. Managers - has people under them. - are generalist. What does a manager do? - planning - organizing - leading - controlling Managers should have skills and these are: - technical skills - People skills - Conceptual skills 5M’s : - man - materials - method - machines - money Conceptual skills - needs the “mind” - highest level Management - does not need compliance - position of trust and confidence Puesto de confianza Pragmatic approach - only concerned about POSITIVE result; no rule or guide. Pragmatism - a philosophy - can give a company an advantage SCOPE OF PROJECT MANAGEMENT > Defining the project - clearly define goals, responsibility, deliverables, and when it must be complied. > Plan - should be detailed and sequential - the steps needed to execute a project - breaking down a project to smaller activities and developing a project schedule - everything should be written down or documented > Organize - forming a team, allocating resources, calculating costs, assessing risks, priject documentation, good communication. - a team should consists of technical, finance, communication committee Responsibility VS Accountability - responsibility can be delegated but accountability cannot > Control - making sure that the target goals are met, assessing progress, making adjustments to ensure targets are achieved. Problem - a deviation from a standard Sale forecast - future estimation or prediction Analyst - their job is to breakdown all the details Zero based budgeting Controlling function - makes sure the target is hit. Just-in-Time - function that avoids idle inventory FACTORS AFFECTING PROJECT MANAGEMENT > time > resources > cost - most important; must stay within the budget Mobilization - the action of bringing resources into use for a particular purpose Gantt Chart - tool for control and monitoring PERT/CPM
