Efficiency: Balancing Work and Life

advertisement
Do you think being efficient is always a good thing?
To my mind, being efficient is all about keeping balance.
But to start a conversation about it, we need to decide what the efficiency of something really is.
For example, in our daily life efficiency means the almost instant delivery of food, goods to the home or
to the office.
Speaking about our mobile devices efficiency means the entire office assembling in one phone,
medicine, insurance, purchase of goods, as well as a library, cinema, games, social media
communication and whatnot else I forgot to mention.
What is an example of efficiency in a career, production or business? Efficiency is defined as the ability
to produce something with a minimum amount of effort.
Efficiency is seen as a good thing.
To be honest, at school and at university, where my grades were good but not excellent, this word
always scared me. After all, since I was a convinced average student in academic performance, it meant
to me only extra efforts, attending additional classes, poring over books at late hours. And, as a result,
no time for hobbies, friends and my youth. Also I was scared excellent student syndrome (we all had
such fellow students) with their eternal fear of taking a test not for an excellent grade.
Now, with 20 years of experience in my profession and career, I maintain efficiency like no one else. I
have learned to appreciate and respect its importance. Gradually, it has become the core concept:
making the best possible, using the resources at hand with the least waste of time and effort,
competitiveness in performance.
But while efficiency can be a good thing, it can also be a distraction from your real goals: your family,
your life, your dreams.
So, I think everything has its time. And efficiency too. Keep balance: worship efficiency during your
working hours and forget about it on your wastefully idle weekends.
