1 Welcome About me • Hello everyone and welcome, first to Sheridan College, and second, to Strategic HR Planning. • Just to quickly introduce myself. My full name is Edna Yvonne Francis, but I use Yvonne rather than Edna. I joined the faculty of the Pilon School of Business in 2007 and have lectured a number of HR courses over the years between then and now. I am very happy to be your professor for this journey through Strategic HR Planning. • I look forward to “meeting” you all. 2 Today….. • Today we will get to know each other a bit, cover the structure and outline of this course so you know what to expect and where to find information, explain how you will be assessed, and discuss how our classes will run. • Also – we will begin our first lecture where we set out to understand the foundation of an organization. This is important as we move on to examine the role and responsibilities of Human Resources Management, and then by extension, the HR Planner. • But first…… Remote Learning • Due to the ongoing issues around the COVID-19 pandemic, this semester this Course will be delivered through remote learning. • With remote learning, all lectures will be delivered online. However, this does not mean it will be online learning. Let’s explain…..see next slide REMOTE LEARNING – Examined Online Learning • Self-directed: learn by yourself • Asynchronous: learn at your own time Online Delivery • Instructor-led: learn together with your instructor and your class mates • Synchronous: learn at the scheduled class time every week You are expected to be present during class time. If you have any issues attending classes or participating in any in-class activities, you need to inform me prior to the class. 5 Hardware • You are expected to have access to a laptop computer, that complies with your program's hardware and software standards: https://it.sheridancollege.ca/laptop-requirements/specs2021.html#winMainstream • Since all classes are taking place remotely, your laptop should have a webcam and a quality headset/microphone, so you can participate in group work, class activities and assessments. 6 Slate In this course, we will be using the following functions on SLATE: • Via Communication: • Announcements will be used every week, to advise students of pre-class preparation for the next week following • Virtual classroom for in-class lecture-time, and meeting one-on-one with your instructor [if requested] • Discussions for activities, questions and answers • Vis Assessments: • Quizzes (for Exams) • Assignments for group/team assignments 7 • You should have received the Student Guide to Virtual Classroom by now. • If not, it is located at SLATE: Content: Course Introduction and Information (scroll down) Virtual Classroom • Because we are using the Virtual Classroom, in-class lecture-time might be recorded. • When the lecture is recorded, if you are on the webcam, your video will be included in the lecture video. • By turning on your webcam during the recorded lectures, you have agreed to include your video in the lecture. • Please note, if we choose to use breakout rooms, these are not recorded. 8 Plan - How Classes Will be Structured Join us online at 1.00 pm on January 11 for our first class. You will need to review the slide lecture BEFORE online class-time and work through any “actions”, e.g. review videos, complete activities, etc. During our in-class-time: this may include announcements, news articles, etc. There will be a mix of activity: discussions, “in-class” activities, real-time investigation, videos, and individual as well as group work. Materials - slide lectures, readings from the required text, other readings, activities. See Week-by-week folders in SLATE: Content Required Text – Strategic Human Resources Planning, 7th ed., Monica Belcourt and Mark Podolsky • Success: The best way to reinforce understanding of the content is by a) doing the pre-class work, and then b) participating during our time together online The Course outline has been adapted to accommodate the remote delivery mode and the 14-week course schedule. Course Outline You will see how this time will be spent, in the Course Outline, which you will find in SLATE: Content – Course Outline Note: The schedule has been set to ensure that all learning outcomes will be met 10 Academic Integrity • We will be vigilant with Academic Integrity in the online environment. • To prevent Plagiarism, for your Group Assignments, a ‘Self-check’ Folder will be set up in the Assessments folder. This is where you will be required to submit your completed assignment, to check your Turnitin score and make changes before final submission. Once you have checked and made sure you have not plagiarised, then you will be able to submit your completed work to the respective Assignment file in the Assessments folder. • Quizzes and tests might be re-designed with Lock-Down Browser and Respondus Monitoring software. 11 Turnitin Statement • Turnitin Statement • “Sheridan is committed to academic integrity. In this Course the professor has chosen to require students to use Turnitin to check their own written work to ensure originality. By taking this course, students agree that they will submit written work for this course to Turnitin for text comparison. Students will have the opportunity to review their initial work and correct any issues identified by Turnitin prior to submitting their final work. students will include the final Originality Report as a part of the written work submission. Students are encouraged to discuss the Originality Report at any time with their faculty member. Assignments submitted to Turnitin will be included as source documents in Turnitin.com’s restricted access database, solely for the purpose of detecting text copying.” What is the LockDown Browser?
