Defined as the vast variety of life forms in the entire Earth, including all species and ecosystems. Ecosystem A geographic area where plants, animals, and other organisms, as well as weather and landscapes, work together to from a bubble of life. Changes in Biodiversity A change in biodiversity could have erratic effects not only in wildlife or marine life but also in human beings. When our ecosystem is not well taken care of, biodiversity encounters changes that may impact human health on such different levels. Biodiversity has declined at an alarming rate in recent years, largely as a result of human activity. Consequences of Biodiversity Loss Loss of Food Loss of medicinal supplies Extinction of Species Loss of habitat Natural Disasters “ The Earth will retain its most striking feature, its biodiversity, only if humans have the prescience to do so. This will occur, it seems, only if we realize the extent to which we use biodiversity.”(Rainforest Conservation Fund, 2017) Nutritional Impact of Biodiversity Biodiversity plays a crucial role in human nutrition through its influence on world food production, as it ensures the sustainable productivity of soils and provides the genetic resources for all crops, livestock, and marine species harvested for food. Health, Biology, and Biodiversity We rely on biodiversity to stay healthy. Biodiversity sustains our food supply, is a source of medicines, and supports the provision of clean air and fresh water while also contributing to economic development, cultural and spiritual enrichment. Although the environment sustains human life, it can also cause diseases. Environmental hazards increase the risk of cancer, heart disease, asthma, and many other illnesses These hazards can be physical, such as pollution, toxic chemicals, and food contaminants, or they can be social, such as dangerous work, poor housing conditions, urban sprawl, and poverty Unsafe drinking water and poor sanitation and hygiene can lead to infectious diseases, such as diarrhea, cholera Environment-Related Illnesses Some human illnesses that are found to be related with its environment include Parkinson’s disease, heart disease, cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, diabetes, obesity, occupational injuries, dysentery, arthritis, malaria, and depression. “Building Globally Competitive Professionals” ADMINISTRATION BUILDING, EASTERN VISAYAS STATE UNIVERSITY CARIGARA CAMPUS, BARANGAY BARUGOHAY NORTE, CARIGARA LEYTE 6529 PHILIPPINES/Mobile Nos. 09173217113/09478907162| Email Add: carigara.campus@evsu.edu.ph | website: www.evsu.edu.ph Republic of the Philippines EASTERN VISAYAS STATE UNIVERSITY Carigara Campus SUMMARY Biodiversity plays a vital role in sustaining life on Earth. It encompasses the vast variety of life forms, from single-celled organisms to complex ecosystems. Biodiversity provides essential goods and services that support human well-being, including food, medicine, and ecological balance. However, the loss of biodiversity has severe consequences. It affects the productivity of ecosystems, disrupts nutrient cycles, and alters environmental conditions. This loss has direct impacts on human health, leading to the spread of diseases, nutritional deficiencies, and other health issues. It is crucial to recognize the importance of biodiversity and take measures to protect and preserve it for the benefit of both the environment and human society. The focus of the lesson is to understand the interrelatedness of society, environment, and health in the context of biodiversity. And it also emphasizes the importance of studying and preserving biodiversity to ensure a sustainable and healthy future for both the environment and human society. “Building Globally Competitive Professionals” ADMINISTRATION BUILDING, EASTERN VISAYAS STATE UNIVERSITY CARIGARA CAMPUS, BARANGAY BARUGOHAY NORTE, CARIGARA LEYTE 6529 PHILIPPINES/Mobile Nos. 09173217113/09478907162| Email Add: carigara.campus@evsu.edu.ph | website: www.evsu.edu.ph
