1. Alliances Remembrance The First World War resulted in the deaths of about 10 million soldiers across the world and millions more suffered as a result of injuries, illness or famine. Each November, we commemorate the lives of the military casualties of the First World War by holding a two-minute silence on Remembrance Day, also known as Armistice Day or Poppy Day. The poppy became a symbol of remembrance after the First World War as many poppies grew on the battlefields after the war had ended.
