Request To A Year: Comprehension
1. Wright was asking for the firmness of he great grandmothers hand as a
Mothers day gift
2. Lengendary and Devotee emphasis the strong passion and desire to persue
arts that the great grandmother had and ‘devotee’ shows how no matter the
situation given the time she will persue her artist vision before attending to her
motherly duty. Legendry can be perceived in two ways in the poets poem,
firstly how the grandmother could juggle the role of being a mother and an
artist. The significance of this is that it shows the complexity and passion for
both roles in her life
3. The setting gives imagery of a high view where the great grandmother could
see everything and as a mother can overlook everything her children do.
4. The poet indicates that the great grandmother was overseeing the situation
before springing into the sketch. This may have indicated a sense of tension or
a heart racing situation the great grandmother was going through to tell
whether her children were safe or not.She didn’t act quickly to the situation
because she was to high up to do anything about the situation. The great
grandmother watching the event happen may show that she truly does care
for her children.
5. No I am not,The mother had no control over the situation from where she was
so if something fatal had occurred if she did take action she wouldn’t have
gotten to the river in time to have done anything about it
6. The great grandmother had eight children,a strong passion for art,she lived in
Switzerland and
7. The great grandmother shows characteristics of care
8. I think the Author of this poem was trying to prove that being a woman in a
society full of expectation and patriarchy, it deattaches women from what they
truly love doing and have a passion for . Having children means a whole new
responsibility which consumes most of any time women get, leading to even
forgetting to take time to themselves and enjoy who they truly are and not
performing a role in society they isn’t a true reflection of them
9. A)An alpenstock is a stick used for hiking
B)Impeded means overweighed by the petticoats the daughter was wearing
10. Firstly Wright uses enjambement in stanza 3 ‘current toward a waterfall’ to
create a fast rapid movement of the water flowing rapidly to create an intense
scene and suspense in the fate of the second son. Also she uses consonance
on ‘struck rock’ to emphasise the quick movement with a ‘ck’ sound at the end
Also she uses plosive in stanza 4 to describe the heavy of the petticoats by the
articulation of the stanza. The d in ‘daughter, impeded’ shows the difficulty to take
action in the heaviness in he petticoat
And lastly Wright uses plosive alliteration in stanza 3 ‘difficult distance’. The ‘d’ has a
tone sounding like an echo which then emphasisis the distance for the mother to do
anything from how high above she was.
