OLUFUNMILOLA (FUNMI) MORAKINYO #7831693 NURS 3542 Reflection 1 (Before Clinical) and Goal Setting Description: My learning experience during this term simulation was great to the extent that I felt I was already taking care of real patient at surgical and mental unit. The first three week of the term was exciting. Being in the virtual and in person simulation with great expectation and experiences that were based on skills needed for this term clinical rotation. I learnt details about what I am going to be doing at surgical and mental clinical rotation. Understanding the precautions needed for patient who want to undergo surgery and experiencing mental health issue, using the patient history and assessment data to plan and provides care for these patients. Use of empathic communication skills in dealing with family members and caregivers who are under psychological distress, providing care and patient teaching with nursing priorities for these patients undergoing diverse illnesses. Also, I can boldly say I gained the knowledge on how to interact with family and caregiver of any surgical patient and how to intervene during their healing and time of distress. While at the pediatric simulation, basic physical assessment of the pediatric patient with post 24 hours surgery and how quickly the vital signs changed gives me better understanding of how vital signs are important assessment both pre and post-operative. Combined this experiences with my last term clinical experience at medicine, where I was able to care for two patients by providing safe, compassionate, clientcentered nursing care for the age-specific client in response to client needs, I believe I will do better and get deep understanding at surgical clinical rotation. Skills learned at NURS 3540 and the class lecture were all practiced when caring for the patients at my last clinical rotation. Different diagnosis, medications, and assessment that I performed last term were what I am still building on today. Part 2: Three Practice Goals related to knowledge, skills and self-compassion Knowledge: Now that I am going to acute surgical rotation, I hope to learn more about the following practices. Respecting and giving dignity to patient as a student nurse, listening actively and using knowledge about their values, beliefs and culture. This will help me to build a trusting relationship with patient and family members and also help me to improve on he cares I want to give them. I also hope to learn from their experiences and sharing of their information, because this will help me to work and build on my nursing assessment and critical thinking I hope to lean more from the knowledge of my CEF, health care team and my co- student nurses at the clinical setting. Learning more skills from them about quality care delivery and patient safety will help me build more skills and put into practice the theoretical aspect of nursing learning. I will also want to learn more on all types of health and illness condition, diagnosis, related surgery, then build together with my last clinical learning experiences and what I have learned so far at school. Skills: I am interested in developing and refining all the skills learnt from the skills lab. I will do this by first observing my CEF, shadowing of the other health care team who have a first-hand experience in providing help in the clinical setting. Then start to refine the psychomotor skill such as thinking before acting, performing head to toes assessment, taking vital signs before administering oral medications and after, parenteral medication, simple and complex wound dressing care, documentation and lots more. This will help me to provide safe care. Communication skills is also important for me develop and refine, using ISBARR to communicate with my CEF, physicians, and buddy nurses in the unit. I am interested in developing this skill with frequent practice by asking for clarification on the care providing for the patient and refine it by communicating effectively using ISBAAR. I will also like to develop the skill of collaborating with health care team, being just attended the Interprofessional collaboration virtually on September 25th, 2020 where I was opportune to meet other students from different faculties. I will refine this learning by working together with others to provide effective and successful care to the patients. Self -compassion: Finally, in other for me to meet up with the demand and expectation from this clinical course together with my exams and personal life challenges, I will need to relax, get enough sleep, think fast, focus more on my goals for this term clinical rotation and get a healthy food with enough fluid. These habits will help me learn more skills and gain knowledge at the clinical and also help me to be ready for any challenges I might encounter in becoming a good nurse.
