OBJECTIVES
After participation in this rotation, the Health Science student will gain knowledge of various procedures
that are performed on the Surgical floor, will be able to identify what types of staff members are employed
on the units and their roles, and will be able to identify the important aspects of care on the surgical floor.

20. How often is a pain assessment done and who is responsible for this assessment?
20. After giving pain medication to a patient, what would be extremely important for the nurse to do for
follow up and when?
21. Describe five safety measures used on the surgical floor (and others) to prevent patient falls.
22. Describe the schedule for taking vital signs post surgery. Why is it so important to stay on
schedule? What information can be gathered with the post op vital signs?
23. What are some common fears of surgical patients prior to surgery?
24. Why are post operative patient’s meals ordered from NPO to clear liquids, then to full liquids, to
light diet, then eventually to regular diet? This is called diet advancement.
