All resources a person has (money, energy, skills, etc.) are used to satisfy needs. The theory tries to explain what motivates people to do certain things. Self Actualization This stage is about the need to reach a person’s full and unique potential, and the desire for something more than material items. Each person’s potential can and will be very different, though becoming self-actualized is the state in which a person becomes the best version of who or what they want to be. Less than1% of the adult population will reach this stage according to Maslow due to the difficulty satisfying the needs at the preceding stages. Examples at this stage will vary widely. This stage is about the need to be recognized and respected by others, and it involves the desire to achieve a certain status. Esteem Example: sense of personal achievement, confidence, self-esteem This stage is about the need for personal relationships, being part of a group, and interacting with others. Love and Belonging Examples: friendships, family relationships, romantic relationships This stage is about the need to feel safe and goes beyond the need to be free from physical harm. It also includes being free from situations that force us to go against our morals and personal beliefs. Security Examples: employment, health, property, morality, family This stage is about things that are necessary for human survival and which we cannot live without. Physiological Examples: food, water, sleep, shelter © 2019 Early Adopters
