Time Allotment: 4 hours Key Concepts Personal Protective Equipment Since safety is everybody’s top priority, welders also see to it that they themselves are protected while performing welding. It is by using safety clothing that will keep them away from harm in welding. Personal Protective Equipment are safety gears a welder needs to be protected from head to toe. It is a cover that will protect him/her from arc rays, heat, radiation, and other harm he/she may encounter while welding. The following are the needed PPE a welder should wear: Body Part Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Purpose Hard hat • To protect the head from falling debris and sparks. • To be used during welding Head https://www.pinterest.ph/pin/427701295835652638/ 2 Author: Jimmy Jr. A. Welders should maintain it clean and in good condition. There will be an appropriate PPE in every activity. Welders should know how to wear, adjust and take off, maintain, and know how long the PPE will last. Eye Protection It is necessary to protect the eye since welding is dealing with high intense light and radiation that can cause damages and injuries. There are flying minute objects as well that may enter the eye that can cause irritation. Thus, 4 Author: Jimmy Jr. A. Sugse School/Station: Surigao City National High School Division: Surigao City email address: jimmy.sugse @deped.gov.ph it is required to wear properly welding helmet fitted with lens or filter shade during welding and safety goggles while chipping or grinding. The following should be considered for eye protection: 1. The helmet should fit for less reflection between the shell and the head. 2. Properly wear your helmet. 3. Avoid sudden change of temperature that can cause crack to the lens. 4. Use clear glass to protect dark glass from slags during welding. 5. Clean lenses and replace damaged lenses. Types of Eye and Face Protection According to CSA Standard Z94.3-15 “Eye and face protectors”, the following are classified common protectors during welding activities: 1. Class 2C – direct/non-ventilated goggles with non-ionizing radiation protection 2. Classes 3 and 4 – welding helmets and hand Shields 3. Class 6B – face shields for non-ionizing radiation protection 4. Class 7B – respirator face piece for non-ionizing radiation protection Skin Protection from Radiation The most common problem a welder will encounter while doing his/her work is the pain from too much radiation that burns the skin. To avoid this, the following should be followed: 1. wear appropriate clothing that prevents UV rays in reaching your skin 2. loosen the button on your neck 3. long sleeves and pants must be worn 4. use a hood to protect the back of your head 5. always wear a welding helmet when doing a welding activity to prevent UV radiation. 6. clothing should be fire and heat resistant. Hearing Protection While performing activities in welding and grinding, an irritating noise is produced that can damage our sense of hearing. That is why most of the time after working, welders find it difficult to hear. To avoid this problem, the wearing of ear muffs or ear plugs is highly recommended. Respiratory Protection Fumes and gases are always present in welding activities that may cause respiratory problems to welders. Thus, the use of respirators as prescribed by the International Standards is recommended to the welders. 5 Author: Jimmy Jr. A.
