What do Mark Zuckerberg, Barack Obama
and Giorgio Armani have in common? If
you're a fan of the minimalist wardrobe,
you would have hit on their uniform
dressing. It seems to be a trending
fashion not to engage with fashion - but
do we really want to go back to the
medieval ages where the peasants all
wore dull browns and greys. Even then,
the aristocracy wore brilliant hues to
express their individuality as well as
their wealth - and it wasn't just the
women! In today's world of abundance,
its not just the aristocracy who can revel
in rich colours and novel silhouettes. Fast
fashion means there is a plethora of
choices at an affordable range for those
who want to look good - at a fraction of
the price. Apart from expressing personal
choice, Fashion is also a huge industry, a
powerhouse driving a cycle of
manufacturing and buying to provide
incomes, profits and even
intergenerational wealth. It employs
people ranging from graphic designers to
models to seamstresses. The economic
livelihood of millions of people depends
on people wanting - and buying- a variety
of clothes. Not everyone is a CEO who
needs to cut down on decision fatigue
and dress monotonously in the same grey
tee ad nauseum. Many people would be
bored with a single outfit or even with
the limited palette a minimalist
wardrobes demand of us.
Have you heard of a capsule wardrobe?
What started as a statement decades ago
has now become a lifestyle for so many
people around the globe, including the
rich and famous! A capsule wardrobe is a
mini wardrobe made up of timeless
pieces that you can mix and match to
make many outfits. The goal of this
wardrobe is to have pieces of clothing
that you love and that are of good
quality. This way, you don't deal with the
frustration that comes with fast fashion.
Our constant desire for brand new,
cheaply made clothing is harming our
planet and our people too. Garment
workers get paid in pennies and work
long hours to create our clothes.
Moreover, the fashion industry is the
second biggest consumer of water and is
responsible for 10% of global carbon
emissions. that's more than all
international flights and maritime
shipping combined. Not to mention that
fast fashion makes up 35% of
microplastic that flows into the ocean.
But these aren't the only ones to blame.
Consumers buy this fast fashion and
throw it out within months. In fact, 3 out
of 5 garments made in 2018 ended up in
a landfill within a year.
This is why it's important for us to be
