What is contemporary Arts?
•
Art produced at the present period in time, includes and develops from postmodern art,
which is itself a successor to Modern art.
•
Art made and produced by artist living today.
•
Statement that an artist makes about life, thoughts, ideas, beliefs, and many other
things that define human life. Simultaneously reflects the realities and values of our society, its
variety portrays the mosaic of our cultural diversity is culture.
•
Contemporary art is often seen as being more accessible than traditional art forms,
since it often deals with topics that are relevant to contemporary society.
•
Philippine contemporary art is the art from the Philippines created within the last few
years or produced at present. The Philippines have a rich art history from architecture, plastic
arts, ornament, and carvings. The abundance of art in this country has made it a gold mine of
art.
The 7 Major Contemporary Art Forms in the Philippines
1.
Music
art form that appeals to the sense of hearing, composed by combining notes into
harmony.
2.
Literature
art form of language through the combined use of words, creating meaning and
experience.
3.
Theater
Art form of performance. Dramatic textis portrayed on stage by actors and actresses
and are enhanced by props, lights and sounds. form of art in which artists use their voices
and/or their bodies, often in relation to other objects, to convey artistic expression.
4.
Film
a technological translation of theater, special effects are utilized to enhance the story
telling
5.
Dance
art of the human form, body is used, mobilized and choreographed in a specifictime,
form and space.
6.
Architecture, Designs and Allied Arts - structure that meant to be used as shelter, its art
relies on the design and purpose of the structure.
7.
Visual Arts
Artwork, such as painting, photography, or sculpture, that appeals primarily to the visual
sense and typically exists in permanent form.
CONTEMPORARY ART PRACTICES FROM VARIOUS REGIONS
A. MUSIC
Song Title
1. Gusto by Zack Tabudlo featuring Al James

expresses the struggles of someone who is deeply attracted to someone they have
known for a long time but have never had the courage to confess their feelings.
2. Gento by SB19

the song is a play of word that means, “ganito” (literally, like this) and is also a double
entendre to “ginto” (gold).
B. DANCE
1. Tinikling

Philippine dance which involves two individual performers hitting bamboo poles, using
them to beat, tap, and slide on the ground, in co-ordination with one or more dancers
who steps over and in between poles
2. Maglalatik

is a folk dance usually performed by male dancers and which integrates the use of
coconut shells. This is a mock war dance that depicts a battle over the highly-prized
coconut meat. Dancers wear coconut shell halves on their hands and on their vests. The
dance is performed by hitting the shells in time to a fast drumbeat. Maglalatik is
typically performed during the religious procession of Biñan, Laguna as an offering to
San Isidro de Labrador, the patron saint of farmers.
C. CONTEMPORARY LITERATURE IN THE PHILIPPINES

Almost all themes in most writings dealt with the development or progress of the
country –like the Green Revolution, family planning, proper nutrition, environment,
drug addiction and pollution. The New Society tried to stop pornography or those
writings giving bad influences on the morals of the people.




theatre, monologists, puppetry, improvisational theatre, street theatre, and
contemporary performance art.
E. CONTEMPORARY FILM
1. HENERAL LUNA

Set during the Philippine-American war, Heneral Luna follows the life of one of
Philippine History's most brilliant soldier, General Antonio Luna, as he tries to lead his
countrymen against colonial masters new and old, and to rise above their own raging
disputes to fulfill the promise of the Philippine Revolution.
2. WALANG HIMALA

The movie 'Himala' shows how people, especially those who are in the lower class, tend
to let God do all the work. I don't mean that having faith in God is wrong but to depend
on God for all your needs is an act of laziness.
F. CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE, DESIGNS AND ALLIED ARTS
1. National Arts Center in Mount Makiling

It was established in 1976 by First Lady Imelda Marcos as a haven for young and aspiring
artists.
2. Coconut Palace

The Coconut Palace was one of Imelda Marcos' great white elephant projects in the
1970s. It was so named because of the extensive use of coconut building materials in its
construction. Nowadays the palace is used mainly for official functions.
G. CONTEMPORARY VISUAL ARTS
1. SPOLIARIUM

Considered the largest painting in the Philippines, “Spoliarium” is among the notable art
pieces of Filipino painter Juan Luna. It features the bloody gladiator matches of Romans
but is also an allegory to the despair and abuses Filipinos suffered from during the
Spanish reign in the country.
2. PLANTING RICE

An artist known for his distinctive art style and realistic paintings, Filipino painter
Fernando Amorsolo is best known for his depiction of the country’s culture, its
picturesque sceneries, portraits of women, and scenes from World War II.

The word rondalla is from the Spanish ronda, meaning “serenade.”
A rondalla is a plucked string ensemble composed of five main instruments: the
bandurria, octavina, laud, guitarra (guitar), and bajo (bass).
