Yiddish Summer Weimar is an one-year summer institute and fete for Yiddish music ,
language and finish which takes lieu in Weimar , FRG .Starting as a 3-day workshop in 1998
, it was officially founded in its current var. in 2006 and has grown to become one of the
most important festivals and educational organisation for Klezmer , Yiddish Song , Yiddish
Language , dancing and civilization .It is known for its transcultural and transnational
position which supports an international erudition community , for the pedagogical access
of its founder , Alan Bern , and for its loyalty to the existence and presentation of historically
informed , coeval Yiddish artistic production .== history == In 1998 , the band Brave Old
humanity was invited by the European summer Academy to learn a 3-day shop in Yiddish
euphony and dance in Weimar , FRG , followed by a concert .The following year , the city of
Weimar was designated a European Das Kapital of Culture and Brave Old domain was
invited back to teach a week-long workshop followed by a concert .Klezmer music , a genre
originating in Eastern Europe and repopularized in the United Department of State in the
1980s , had become popular in Federal Republic of Germany in the 1990s due to foreign
artist such as Brave Old World , The Klezmatics , Alex Jacobowitz and Giora Feidman , as
well as High German groups like Kasbek , Aufwind , Zupfgeigenhansel , and Karsten Troyke
.A number of American English and ex-Soviet klezmer and Yiddish musician settled in
Germany during this time , including Alan Berne ( in 1989 ) and Book of Joel Rubin .Because
of the winner of the 1999 Brave Old World shop , the idea of an annual shop and festival
emerged .In 2000 , the Kulturbüro LaRete , run by Julia Draganović , took over the fete
management , under the umbrella of the Kuratorium Schloß Ettersburg , a non-profit
system that made it possible to apply for populace financing for the festival .At the Sami
time , capital of Switzerland became the Artistic manager , and the festival was officially
named Klezmer Wochen Weimar ( Weimar Klezmer Weeks ) .In 2002 Draganović 's use was
taken over by Stephanie Erben .Between 2000 and 2005 , the festival grew from one
calendar week to four hebdomad through the addition of foster week-long workshops
dedicated to private genres of Yiddish expressive cultivation and spoken language .During
this time , world evening electronic jamming sessions in cafés became a salient feature of
speech of the festival , giving student productive opportunities for intimate acquisition and
creating last connective with the superior general Weimar community of interests .This
integrated urban scene also distinguishes the festival from others such as KlezKanada or
KlezKamp , which have operated as rural retreats .In 2005 , Bern decided that shop and
concerts would comprise unified by an annual special topic , and committed the festival to a
transcultural and transnational position , understanding Yiddish culture as fundamentally
related to former refinement in a complex matrix .By 2006 , the festival had outgrown both
its original focus on klezmer music and the infrastructure provided by the Kulturbüro
LaRete and the Kuratorium Schloß Ettersburg .It was decided to create a new nonprofit
organization to consort the fete , called Other music e.V .( changed in 2018 to former Music
honorary society e.V . ) .At the same clock time , the festival was re-named Yiddish Summer
Weimar ( YSW ) .It has since grown to become one of the independent Yiddish medicine and
cultural festivals in Germany and worldwide .In 2008-9 , YSW launched its first-class
honours degree major international projection , The other Europeans .Funded by the
European Union and in partnership with the Jewish Culture fete in Kraków and the
KlezMore festival in Austrian capital , The Other Europeans brought together 14 player

Belgium to search the common repertory of klezmer and Lăutari musicians who were
dynamic in Moldova from the 18th through the recently 20th century .This project was
given the Best recitation Award in Favor of the Roma Community award by the European
Commission in 2010 , and resulted in a CD released in 2011 , Splendor .In 2010 , Erben left
the arrangement and the festival management was taken over by a squad that included
Katrin Petlusch , Katrin Füllsack and Johannes St. Paul Gräßer .In 2013 , in cooperation with
the tourism go-ahead Weimarer Sommer ( Weimar summer ) , Yiddish Summer Weimar
introduced a exceptional Festival Week featuring nightly concerts and a daylight program of
free , hands-on introductory workshop open to everyone .Whereas concerts had previously
taken blank space as section of the workshops , the fete Week constituted a newfangled
platform for concerts , films and former public effect in a digest period of fourth dimension ,
and it remains a key lineament of YSW .In 2016 , YSW received fancy funding from the
German Federal Cultural Foundation for the creation of two John R. Major new works : Bobe
Mayses : Jewish knight & other fable , a collaborative marionette theater production
directed by Jenny cos , and Gilgul , a contemporary dance workplace created and directed by
Steven Weintraub .The following year , Andreas Schmitges became Curator of YSW , with
Berne continuing as Artistic Director .Under Schmitges ’ curatorship , YSW rapidly expanded
to admit international young person rally project such as the Caravan Orchestra , the Kadya
choir , and the Triangle Orchestra , concerts in Erfurt , Eisenach and former cities and
township in Thuringia ( YSW goes Thuringia ) , and a new emphasis on in-house
productions of New Yiddish Culture .2019 represented the pre-pandemic heights full stop of
this maturation , when , once again with the support of the Federal Cultural Foundation of
Federal Republic of Germany , Yiddish summertime Weimar was capable to bring about
seven major master copy , international artistic projects in the framework of `` The Weimar

Efim Chorny ) .Since 2019 , YSW has explicitly embraced a quadruple mission : the research
, transmittance , macrocosm and presentation of historically-informed New Yiddish
cultivation .In 2020 and 2021 , YSW took place outdoors and in especial format due to the
Covid pandemic and dance effect were cancelled .In 2022 and 2023 , it has returned to its
pre-pandemic format of mingle indoors and outdoors venue , workshops , concerts , the
Festival Week and other special case .On average , more than 200 hoi polloi attend one or to
a greater extent shop each year , and approximately 10,000 attend its public events .Many of
the shop attendees return annually .Stefan skirt chaser , the Creator city manager of Weimar
from 2006 to 2018 , has been a major jockstrap of the festival .In 2009 Weimar gave the
nonprofit organization organization a 33-year , low cost lease on an idle , erstwhile school
construction ; it became the home of the Other medicine Academy ( OMA ) , conceived as a
new variety of ethnical core dedicated to multifariousness , inclusion body , individual and
social empowerment and creativity .The OMA is the physical dwelling stand for Yiddish
summer Weimar and all of its former projects .putz Kleine , the stream Lord Mayor of
Weimar , is also a major supporter of both YSW and the OMA .The fete has received
acknowledgement and casual support from the European Commission , the Federal Cultural
Foundation , the Ministries of Education and refinement of Thuringia , the German language
euphony Council , the city government of Weimar as well many other public means , private
foundations and mortal .== Pedagogy == The festival 's pedagogical glide path has been
developed by its father Alan Berne , and distinguishes it from other yearly Jewish or Yiddish
music workshop .The ethnomusicologist Phil Alexander has described it as having four main
elements : `` dissolution of bodily structure and appendage , continuity between music and
physical drift , organic connexion between all stages of music making , and integration into
the metropolis and community . ''peculiar attention is also paid to issues of identicalness ,
authenticity , and intercultural fundamental interaction .
