Google “Purdue OWL MLA” and click on the appropriate link.
A. Click on “MLA Formatting and Style Guide” on the left-hand menu to fill in the following
blanks (change the font color for your answers to red):
1. How should your paper be spaced? Double
2. You should press the “space bar” key one time(s) after a period or other
punctuation mark.
3. Margins should be set to 1 in. on all sides.
4. Should you indent the first line of your paragraph? Yes
5. In the upper left-hand corner of the first page, list your name, your instructor’s name,
the course, and the date.

6. Don't underline your title or put it in quotation marks; write the title in Title case, not in
all capital letters.
7. Create a header in the upper right-hand corner that includes your last name, followed
by a space with a page number. Pages should be numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals
(1, 2, 3, 4, etc.), one-half inch from the top and flush with the right margin. (Note: The easiest
way to set this up is to insert a page #, double click in the text box, then type your last name
and hit the space bar. Make sure to highlight it and change the font and font size. Microsoft
word often defaults these to Calibri and Courier New.)
B. Next, visit “MLA In-text Citations: The Basics”:
1. MLA format follows the author-page method of in-text citation. This means that the
author's last name and the page number(s) from which the quotation or paraphrase
is taken must appear in the text, and a complete reference should appear on your
Works Cited page. The author's name may appear either in the sentence itself or in

parenthesis following the quotation or paraphrase, but the page number should always
appear in the parentheses, not in the text of your sentence.
2. If you cite more than one work by a particular author, include a shortened title for the
particular work. Put titles of books in italics and titles of articles in quotation marks.
3. An indirect source is a source cited in another source. For such indirect quotations use qtd.
in to indicate the source actually used.
4. Sometimes writers are confused with how to craft parenthetical citations for electronic
sources because of the absence of page numbers, but often, these sorts of entries do not
require any sort of page number at all.
C. Now visit “MLA Formatting Quotations” to fill in the next set:
1. For quotations that are more than four lines of prose (text) or three lines of
verse (poetry), place quotations in a free-standing block of text and omit quotation
marks. Start the quotation on a new line, with the entire quote indented one inch from
the left margin; maintain double-spacing. (Note: You do this by highlighting the text
with your cursor, right clicking, and choosing “Paragraph.” Type a “1” in the left
indentation box.)
2. If you add a word or words from a quotation, you should indicate the deleted word or
words by using ellipses, which are three periods (. . . ) preceded and followed by a
space.
D. Next, visit “Works Cited Page: Basic Format” to answer the following:
1. Begin your Works Cited page on a separate page at the end of your research paper. It
should have the same one-inch margins and last name, page number header as the
rest of your paper. (Note: To start your Works Cited Page, hit “Insert” alongside “File,”

“Edit,” “View,” etc. and choose “Page Break.” Your Works Cited Page should begin at
the very top of the page.)
2. Label the page Works Cited (do not italicize the words Works Cited or put them in
quotation marks) and center the words Works Cited at the top of the page.
3. Double space all citations, but do not skip spaces between entries.
4. Indent the second and subsequent lines of citations by 0.5 inches to create a
hanging indent. (Note: Highlight Works Cited entries and right click. Click on
“Paragraph” and choose “Hanging” from the “Special” drop down menu.)

Visit “MLA Works Cited Page: . . .” to fill in the following. There are various tabs
such as books, electronic sources, etc. Give the generic format examples from the
site.
1. What is the basic format for books?
Last Name, First Name. Title of Book. City of Publication, Publisher, Publication Date.
2. What is the basic format for a republished book?

For books that originally appeared at an earlier date and that have been republished at a later one, insert the
original publication date before the publication information.
3. What is the format for a page (article) on a website?
Author(s). "Title of Article." Title of Periodical, Day Month Year, pages.
4. What is the format for a Recorded Film or Movie?
List films by their title. Include the name of the director, the film studio or distributor, and the release
year. If relevant, list performer names after the director's name.
