Bacillary Dysentery
It is a gastrointestinal
disease by bacterial
infection
Causative
agent
 Japanese
microbiologist, Kiyoshi Shiga, who was
investigating an outbreak of sekiri (means
“dysentery” in Japanese). He isolated a bacillus from
stool sample and called it Bacillus dysenteriae, now
it is known as Shigella dysenteriae.
 Shigella is a form of Bacterial diarrhea caused by
gram negative bacteria that can be found human
Gut.
Incubation period
The incubation period of Bacillary
Dysentery is usually 1-3 days, but it can
be up to 7 days .
Period of Communicability
The period of Communicability it
will last 12 to 96 hrs but usually 1
to 3 days.
MODE OF TRANSMISSION
• Bacillary Dysentery is infectious disease
that can be transmitted via oral-feacal
route or through contact with
contaminated water and food.
Pathognomonic sign:
For patients who developed Bacillary Dysentery, they commonly
present with :
• Fever
• Diarrhea
• Abdominal cramps
• Nausea and vomiting
• Stool may contain
blood and mucus
Prevention
Practice good

Don't share
personal items
Throughly cook
all foods
Use clean
water
Diagnosis and Test:
• stool culture test.

when a person swallows food or
water containing vibrio cholerae
bacteria.

• It is aquatic Bacteria

• Profuse watery diarrhea some
times described as "rice watery
stool."
• Electrolyte imbalance
• Nausea and vomiting
• Dehydration
Prevention
• Avoid tap water
• Don't eat raw foods
• Wash fruits and vegetables
• Keep your hands clean
Management and treatment:
The most important part of cholera
treatment is preventing or reversing
dehydration
• ORS
• IV FLUIDS
• Antibiotics
Take note!
V. Cholera bacteria is usually disappear
from the body within two weeks.
