Namroud 1 Jesus Namroud Professor Papas History 201 H 7 November 2023 Article Review Paper First Draft According to Edmund S. Morgan's article "Slavery and Freedom: The American Paradox," freedom and slavery existed together in some form throughout early American history. He argues that slavery remained an impactful factor in the situation, even if people were fighting for freedom. Morgan's ideas force us to reconsider traditional narratives about America's history. It's significant because it pushes us to examine more closely how ideas, power, and the struggle for freedom relate, even when it appears to be at odds. Morgan's piece dives into the early years of America, highlighting the connected nature of slavery and the struggle for liberation. He analyzes old letters and court records to demonstrate the relationship between these two aspects of peoples' daily lives. We can see how the combination of freedom and slavery affected the nation because Morgan gives us an in-depth description of what it was like for both people who were enslaved and those who desired freedom. Namroud 2 Through the use of authentic historical accounts such as letters, diaries, and official documents from colonial times, Morgan is able to support his main thesis. This gives us a better understanding of how people truly experienced the intricate relationship between freedom and slavery. His ability to go deeply into history is one of his strongest points, but there may be a drawback in that he may not cover all the various ways this occurred around the country. Morgan incorporates historical data with the opinions of other specialists, or secondary sources, and provides specific citations at the conclusion of his piece to indicate where he got his information .Although he acknowledges the opinions of others, he may emphasize more the ways in which those who were oppressed struggled to escape their circumstances.
