Introduction
Overview of First place Fitness
First place Fitness was the first and still is open as a 24/7 Gym Located in the
Heart of Hamilton on the busy 614 Te Rapa Road along the straight. The gym
caters to plenty areas/fields of fitness training. Originally the large warehouse
like building was a powerlifting gym called BodyAffects however in 2006 got
brought buy the current owner of First Place Fitness.
With 6 specialty training areas/zones such as a General & Heavy weights,
Stretching & Movement, Cardio & Finally a Combat Zone kitted out with a full
boxing ring for May Thai & Boxing. And to top it off they are the only Gym in
the Waikato to include morning & evening daycare to further broaden the
opportunity’s for people to come and achieve there fitness goals.
Ph 07 849 6775, Website & Social accounts (@First Place Fitness) there
plenty of ways to get and stay in contact with the Gym, With Staffed hours
between 5:30AM - 8PM Monday to Thursday, 5:30AM - 7PM Friday & 7AM 12PM Saturday.
First Place also provides multiple services such as a variety of classes within
the specialty training zones such as BATs, Box fit, Zumba & also Qualified
personal trainers. On top of all that they include Private saunas, Plenty of free
carparks, over 50 cardio equipment/machines and Wifi.
Overall First place Fitness is almost a mega gym if one were to say that
provides so many unique areas of fitness & services to support you through
your personal fitness journey & balancing life.
Overview of Staff
First place currently employ 16 personal trainers that are all have some form
of qualification e.g Wintec or NZIHF however do not require to be registered or
qualified under Reps.
Organizational structure is how a specific business or organization runs in
terms of authority with operation.
First Place Fitness is Owner owned however has managers underneath such
as a manger for the PTs to help run operations more smoothly. They then
underneath have the PTs themselves providing a 3 layer authority and
organization structure.
They offer multiple forms and ways for there PTs to work with one of the 16
being on Payroll under the Gym & the rest are independent contractors and
pay rent ($180/week Full time, $90/week Part time) to the Gym to use the
equipment to do their sessions/classes
First place houses around 3000 members however on around 55% (1500)
members regularly show up and the gym can likely house another 500
members that regularly show up to train. It is about a 6:5 Female:male ratio
with 18 - 35 being the most common age group of members,
With First place they offer a free consult & personalized program when
someone signs up to the gym, They then match the new customer to the gym
to one of the PTs which normally covert 1/3 clients from the free session to a
regular clients.
Majority/Average PT Charges $60 an hr (Which is usually 1 session) however
the more experienced/valuable PTs charge upwards to $90 an hr. There value
is usually determined not only by experience and knowledge but also
personality and likable nature. With good sessions and happy client word of
mouth spreads about PTs and they’re ability.
What are the key roles and responsibilities of staff? What tasks do they
undertake? What do employers look for when hiring?
A lot of staff are independently contracted and support there own clients,
However one is fully employed and on payroll However all PTs while working
there are there to support any gym member with quick questions or advice. So
They need to be friendly and approachable.
First place fitness hires specifically more off personality especially for
reception & daycare but also for PTs however they will need a qualification.
This is because having good soft skills will take them further than knowing
everything top to bottom.
With the receptionist and child care they are all required to be first aid trained
however half of the rest of all the other staff are also current first aid trained.
They also have cleaners every day that come in and clear the facility daily to
keep everything hygienic for their clients
Front Desk
Observations of the front desk, its layout, its features and services. What is
expected of front desk staff?
The front desk is very open and is expected to be welcoming with a circular
arch right at the door and is manned only during staffed hours. During those
staffed hours it is expected that the workers are very friendly and
approachable. The front desk also acts as a info area with knowledge of all
the plans & classes have to offer & prices.
Reception also provides tours of the Gym, Cleaning, Supplements and Admin
work for First Place to support the customer to have enjoyable experience.
Customer service
What customer service practices and does the gym have in place?
The customer service needs to meet and then exceed the expectations of the
customers, First Place Fitness has an emphasis on positive personality and
soft skills. They hire off of these standards as customers enjoy people that are
relatable and understanding which will convert them into reoccurring
customers. Which is what I noticed that all the Pts have friendly approachable
smiles and feeling.
Client management
What systems are in place to track and manage clients?
At first place all PTs track and manage their own individual clients however
there is an overviewing PT manager who if their were any issues within the
gym outside of the individual PTs control would handle it.
They also have a digital system that tracks and stores info about clients, this is
secured and not open to public and kept private. It is also a health and safety
measure if anything medically were to go wrong.
Health and Safety
Describe the health and safety/risk management and mitigation procedures
adhered to by the gym
Every room has a panic button & there are constant 24hr health and safety
protocols and 24hr camera surveillance throughout the whole gym and there
rooms. All the rooms all have fire exits and extinguishers installed and get
checked monthly.
All the PTs have access to their clients screening information they take when
getting to know their client and their goals/health. This will help prevent and
assist if a medical issue were to go wrong.
Positives
– Provide a minimum of 3 pros and cons of the gym visited as you see it.
Clearly justify each point.
PROS
- The amount of variety with the different rooms and sections -There are
multiple rooms to choose from allowing you to target specific fitness and
training styles of you own desire
- The cardio machines tracking heart rate and aerobic energy - Supports your
tracking of progress and help target that fat burning zone with cardio zone 2.
- Open 24/7 - Allows you to train when you want and can around your own
buy life and schedule
Negatives
- very generic weights equipment, not a lot of olympic of powerlifting specific although there are plenty room the weights room itself is very generic and
does not have stiff bars or power bars used in powerlifting nor calibrated
plates.
- Only one location in a very busy area in Hamilton - Transport to the gym can
become an issues as there is only one location and it is also located in a
busy area
- Can get very busy during combat sessions. - they have specific combat
sessions which can house a heap of people causing a spike of population at
the gym which if it was the only time you can go to the gym can be a
downside.
Conclusion
I Noticed First Place Fitness to be an awesome Gym for a busy parent or
general fitness goer. Also if you were combat fighter/trainer would be ideal.
However despite the large variety it is not ideal for a Oly lifter or powerlifter
due to the generic nature of the equipment. Overall a very friendly workforce
and fairly great prices and deals for your everyday person wanting to improve
their overall fitness when they can and not limited to opening hours.
