What are
Group 2
elements ?
Group II elements also known as alkaline earth
metals are in
the s block in the Periodic Table. They have two stype orbitals in their
outer shell.
They have high melting points and their
metallic and ionic radius increases down
the group .

Barium
A soft silvery-white element in its
pure form and a white liquid in its
liquid form. It oxidizes readily with
water and air. It has a density of
3.62 g/cm3.
Uses of
Barium (Ba)
Barium has few uses in its pure form.
Its compounds are used mainly.
Barium hydroxide (Ba(OH)2) is used
in the manufacture of oil and
greases additives.

Use of Barium
Sulfate
(BaSO4)
Barium sulfate in suspension is
utilized medicinally as a
radiocontrast specialist for X-ray
imaging and other indicative
strategies.

Magnesium
Silvery-white metal with a high
boiling point and melting point. It is
one of the lightest metal among all
structural metals with a density of
1.738 g/cm3.
Uses of
Magnesium
(Mg)
Magnesium plays an important role
in living organisms. Their ions are
necessary for the formation of
chlorophyll in green plants .
Magnesium ions are also required
for more than 300 biochemical
reactions in the human body since
they are essential for the functioning
of many enzymes.
Uses of
Magnesium
Oxide (MgO)
Magnesium oxide (MgO) is used as an
antacid and mild laxative and has many
nonmedicinal uses.
Magnesium oxide is also used to make
refractory lining in furnaces because of
its high melting point and low reactivity

Calcium
Silver-white metal with a high
boiling point and melting point. It is
a fairly soft metal that can be cut
with a knife. Its density is 1.54
g/cm3.It is a godd conductor of
elctricity and heat.
Uses of
Calcium
(Ca)
Calcium carbonate, calcium oxide
and calcium hydroxide are used in
agriculture to counteract soil acidity.
These are also used in water
treatment to reduce acidity and as a
flocculant.
Uses of
Calcium
Carbonate
(CaCO3)
Calcium carbonate is used in the
construction industry as a building
material, e.g. marble, or as an
ingredient of cement. It is widely
used in medicine as dietary calcium
supplement and an antacid

Uses of
Calcium
Hydroxide
(CaOH)
In the construction industry, calcium
hydroxide is a main ingredient in
mortar for bricks and stone, plaster,
and cement.
Calcium hydroxide is also used in the
manufacturing of some pesticides, in
the production of paints and
waterproofing materials

Calcium
compounds
Calcium carbonate, calcium oxide
and calcium hydroxide are used in
the industry, they are used in
scrubbers to desulphurize waste
gases and to neutralize acidic
effluents.

Beryllium
Steel-gray metal that is quite
brittle at room temperature. It is
non-metallic and hold excellent
thermal conductivity. It does not
react with water unlike the other
alkaline earth metals.
Uses of
Beryllium
(Be)
Beryllium is used as a low
percentage component in hard metal
alloys, that are used in high-quality
springs, gyroscopes, spacecraft.
Beryllium oxide is used in the
production of rocket engines and
high temperature nuclear devices.

Strontium
Soft, silver-yellow metal . It has an
atomic weight of 87.62. It reacts
vigorously with water and oxygen.
It has a density of 2.6 g/cm3.
Uses of
Strontium
(Sr)
Strontium is used in producing glass
for color televisions. It is also used in
producing ferrite ceramic magnets
Strontium oxide is used to improve
the quality of pottery glazes.
Radium
In its pure form, it is a silvery-white
metal. It is the heaviest of the
alkaline earth metals. Discovered in
1898 by Marie and Pierre Curie from
a uranium ore. It has a density of 5
g/cm3.
Uses of
Radium
(Ra)
It has a major role in medicines,
particularly in the treatment of
cancer by the radiation of gamma
rays.
Commercially, it is used for the
production of toothpaste, hair
creams.
Fun Facts
Did You Know that Group 2
elements are called alkaline metals
because they form alkaline
solutions, hydroxides, when reacting
with water and their oxides are
found in the earth’s crust.
Calcium is not found free. It the 5th
most abundant element in the
earth’s crust. Calcium is also
abundant on the Moon.
