Chinese art has a strong tradition of painting. Chinese painting is more concerned with
water based techniques, rather than oils or acrylics. It also emphasizes the importance of
white space and may be said to favour landscape painting. Landscape painting was regarded

On the other hand , Origami or paper folding is the traditional art of Japan. The goal
of this art is to transform a flat sheet of paper into a finished sculpture through folding and
sculpting techniques without cutting as much as possible.

The paper will automatically fold according to the previous fold. Then it will take a
triangular shape.
3. Fold the top left corner to the bottom point. Similarly fold the top right corner to the
bottom point. Now flip the piece and do the same method on the other side as well.
4. Fold the right side over the left side. Also do this method on the opposite side as well.
Now bring the left flap towards the center and fold it along the vertical crease on the
middle. Do the same on the right side.

EXTERNAL (FOREIGN) AND INTERNAL (INDIGENOUS) INFLUENCES THAT ARE
REFLECTED IN THE DESIGN OF EAST ASIAN ARTS
Background Information for Learners
The arts and culture of East Asian countries are greatly influenced externally and
internally. External influence refers to the influence from outside East Asian countries while
internal influence refers to the influences within these countries.
An external influence to these countries is Buddhism. Buddhism is manifested in the
people’s lifestyle which speaks of their culture, in their arts and crafts which are reflected in
the design of their artworks. Example of their arts are temples and houses that have sweeping
roofs because of a belief that it will protect them from the elements of water, wind and fire.
Buddhists believed that it helped ward off evil spirits which were deemed to be straight lines.
Statuaries in a meditating position because of a belief that Buddhism is a guide to life,
meditation and a means to salvation after life.
East Asian countries have common characteristics, traditions, and values—follows
which also relates to their arts and crafts. These are evident in the form of worked stone and
blades from the Paleolithic and Neolithic periods that suggests an exchange between the early
East Asian cultures and the early introduction of Chinese influence. This cultural interaction
was facilitated in part by land bridges that connected Japan with the continent.

THE RELATIONSHIP OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF CRAFTS IN

Background Information for Learners
From ancient times, China has been the dominant and referential culture in East Asia.

cultures and the early introduction of Chinese influence. This cultural interaction
was facilitated in part by land bridges that connected Japan with the continent.

The Commonalities and Differences of the Cultures of the East Asian Countries
in Relation to Philippines Cultures
Background Information for Learners
The culture of Asia encompasses the collective and diverse customs and traditions of
art, architecture, music, literature, lifestyle, philosophy, politics and religion that have been
practiced and maintained by the numerous ethnic groups of the continent of Asia since
prehistory. Nature has always been regarded as an element of utmost importance in East
Asian countries. Landscape painting is regarded as the highest form of painting in China.
Ancient Chinese paper folding emphasizes more in the making of hats and boats unlike in
Japan where flowers, animals, birds, fish, geometric shapes, and dolls are the common
models used in origami. There are six subjects/themes and three concepts ( earth, heaven,
humankind) in the production of Chinese art. And in Japan, Japanese painting and
printmaking depicts scenes from everyday life that are often crowded with figures and detail.
This tradition began in the early medieval period under Chinese influence.
Asia has a variety of festivals and celebrations. In China, Chinese New Year, Dragon
Boat Festival, and Mid-Autumn Moon Festival are traditional holidays, while National Day is
a holiday of the People’s Republic of China.
In Japan, Japanese New Year, National Foundation Day, Children’s Day, O-bon, The
Emperor’s Birthday and Christmas are popular. According to Japanese celebrate Buddhism’s
O-born in midsummer, Shito’s Shichi-Go-San in November, and Christmas and Hatsumoude
in winter together.
In Philippines is also tagged as the “ Fiesta Country” because of its all-year-round
celebrations nationwide. There is a very strong Spanish influence in their festivals, thus
making the Philippines distinctively “ Western”, yet retaining its native Asian characteristics.
Fiesta is the term used to refer to a festival. Most of these fiestas are celebrated in honor of
the patron saint.
