Presenting examples/ instances of the new lesson Activity 1: The Spinning Earth Caution: ▪ Do not play with the flashlight. ▪ Do not point the light directly to the eyes of your companion. Directions: ✓ Place the materials in front of the learners. ✓ Ask for two volunteers to help with activity. ✓ Turn on the flashlight and point it directly towards the globe or ball. ✓ Slowly turn the globe, ball or any round objects in a counterclockwise (West to East) movement. ✓ Answer the questions that follow. Questions: 1. What each object represent? A. Flashlight B. Globe 2. What kind of solid figure is the globe? 3. Which part of the globe would receive light? 4. Would all parts of the globe receive light at the same time from the flashlight? Why? 5. What would happen to the part of the Earth which receives light? Downloaded by RAYMOND ABANES (raymond.abanes@deped.gov.ph) 6. What would happen to the part of the Earth not receiving light? 4. Discussing new concepts and practicing new skills no. 1 7. What do you think is our lesson for today? To further pupils understanding of the concept and skills, lead them to demonstrate how earth’s rotation affects day and night through the use of multimedia. Video Presentation Day and Night Explanation,Causes Science for Kids https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hWkKSkI3gkU Standards in viewing a video presentation. 1. Be quiet and stay on your seat while watching the video. 2. Remember all the important details shown in the video. 3. Be prepared to share your insights or understanding about the video presented. Follow up questions about the video clip presented: 1. What is the video about? 2. Who are the characters in the video? 3. What are they doing in the first part? 4. Why do we wake up when it’s daylight? 5. What do you call the earth’s representation? 6. Can anybody locate the axis of the earth? 7. What is an axis? 8. What do you call the movement of the earth on its axis? 9. How long does it take for the earth to make one complete rotation? 10. What causes day and night? In your first activity, the globe represents the Earth. A globe is a representation of our planet. The green areas represent land, while the blue areas represent water. The flashlight represents the sun. The sun gives off light energy to the planets in the solar system. When the globe moves in counterclockwise (East to West) motion, there are parts of the globe which directly face the light and there are also parts which are facing away from the light. When the Earth spins on its axis, the part directly facing the sun experiences daytime while the part of the Earth which facing away from the sun experiences nighttime. An axis is an imaginary line where the Earth spins. It is tilted 23.5 degrees and it extends from the North Pole to the South Pole. The spinning of the Earth on its axis Downloaded by RAYMOND ABANES (raymond.abanes@deped.gov.ph) is called rotation. It takes 24 hours or one day to complete one rotation and this causes day and night. The counterclockwise spinning of the Earth on its axis makes the sun seems to rise in the East and seems to set on the West. https://www.first-learn.com/rotatory-motion-of-theearth.html# 5. Discussing new concepts and practicing new skills no. 2 Ask: 1. What might happen if the earth does not rotate? 2. What effects might it bring to the earth itself, to the people and other living organism? 6. Developing Mastery (Leads to Formative Assessment) Group Activity: 1. 2. 3. 4. Choose your leader. The leader gets the activity sheets from the teacher. Go to your respective area assigned to you. Begin doing the activity following the group standards. 5. Be mindful of the rubrics presented. 6. Finish in five minutes, and then present your output in less than 3 minutes. Standards for the Science activity. 1. 2. 3. 4. Work with the group cooperatively.
