BAROQUE MUSICAL STYLE
 Baroque came from Portuguese word barroco which means
oddly shaped pearl.
 Baroque was used to negatively describe the irregular, odd, and
pompous architectural design, and paintings.
 Stages of Baroque Period:
*Early Baroque Period
*Middle Baroque Period
*Late Baroque Period
BAROQUE VOCAL MUSIC
 “Ombra mai fu” is an aria for George Frideric Handel opera Xerxes
also known as Serse.
Opera:
 Opera – most important vocal genre during Baroque Period.
- A theatrical work set to music that integrates both vocal
and instrumental music.
- It is first played at courts and places as part of royal
celebration.
 Camerata – a group of nobles and intellectual from Florence who
started the opera at Italy.
 Overture – most of the opera starts with it. Pure playing of
instrument at the beginning played by the orchestra.
 Aria – is a song in an opera for solo voice accompanied by the
orchestra.
 Recitative – speech-like tones in an opera.
 Ensembles – two or more singers. Can be duet, trios, quartet or
even octet.
 Oratorio – The text is typically a narrative and based on biblical
themes but not intended for church services though it may be
stages in churches and prayer halls called oratorios.
- Performed without costumes, scenery, and acting.
Sacred Cantata – a musical composition that contains different
movement, solo arias, recitatives, and chorus with orchestral
accompaniment.
BAROQUE INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC
Trio Sonata – two violins and a continuo.
Concerto Grosso – musical piece counteracted or passed between
small group of soloist and larger group.
Concertino - Smaller Group
Tutti or Ripieno – Larger Group

MEDIEVAL ART
Medieval comes from the Latin word medium (middle) and aevum
(age). MIDDLE AGES
- Artwork are centered on Christianity. Highly influenced by faith
and devotion of people to the Church.
Byzantine Art – the chief principle of Byzantine construction was the arch
and the developed roofing device.
Hagia Sophia – means Holy Wisdom which stands in Constantinople. It is
the triumph of Byzantine architecture.
Illumined Manuscripts – during the medieval period were consider as a
high art form,
Gothic period is essentially defined as Gothic architecture.
Stained Glass – large pieces of bright colored glass.
Gargoyles – is carved stone grotesque with spout designed to convey
water from the roof and away from the side of building.

 A celebration of the community’s bountiful harvest.
 A way of showing appreciation and gratitude for an entire year
of abundant blessings.
 Way of giving honor to the saints and patrons.
 Sharing food among the people in the community.
 Decorating houses.
 Presenting local folk dances on the streets.

Drugs – chemical substance that can change the body functions.
- It can be taken in by mouth, inhaled through the nose, injected
through muscles or veins, or applied through skin.
Psychoactive Substance – drugs affecting the brain’s normal
communication system.
Addiction – severe problems associated with substance use.
Intoxication – a substance-specific syndrome which includes body and
behavioral changes that are observed due to the recent intake of the
substance or drugs.
Withdrawal - a substance-specific syndrome which includes body and
behavioral changes due to stopping or reduction of heavy and
prolonged substance use.
Substance Use Disorder – are group of disorder characterized b mental,
behavioral, and bodily symptoms that result from a person’s continued
use of substance despite it causing significant substance-related
problems.
