COLISAO JR. April, 2024 Grade Level Learning Area Quarter 10 Science Fourth MONDAY I. OJECTIVES A. Content Standards B. Performance Standards The learners demonstrate an understanding of 1. the influence of biodiversity on the stability of ecosystems 2. an ecosystem as being capable of supporting a limited number of organisms The learners shall be able to: write an essay on the importance of adaptation as a mechanism for the survival of a species. Learning Competencies: (S10LT – III h -41) The learners should be able to explain how species diversity increases the probability of adaptation and survival of organism in changing environments C. Learning Competencies/ Objectives (Write the LC code for each) Objectives: At the end of the lesson, at least 80% of the learners should be able to achieve the following with at least 75% success: 1. Identify the factors that lead to species endangerment and extinction; 2. Analyze how biodiversity affects the stability of an ecosystem; 3. Suggest ways on how local biodiversity can be protected and conserved in the community. II. CONTENT Learning Task III. LEARNING RESOURCES A. References 1. Teacher’s Guide pages 2. Science – Grade 10 Alternative Delivery Mode Quarter 3 – Module 8: Biodiversity and Stability First Edition, 2020 PowerPoint Presentation, Video Clips, Pictures In developing the lesson about biodiversity and stability, several strategies should be applied to ensure effective learning: o Prior knowledge connection o Clear expectations o Engagement and curiosity o Real-world relevance IV. Reviewing previews lesson or presenting the new lesson (Elicit) B. Establishing a purpose for the lesson (Engage) C. Presenting examples/instance of the new lesson (Engage/Explore) D. Discussing new concepts and practicing new skills #1 (Explain) E. Discussing new concepts and practicing new skills #2 (Explore/Elaborate) F. Developing Mastery (Leads to Formative Assessment) (Explain) G. Finding practical applications of concepts and skills in daily living (Elaborate/Extend) Show an image of a diverse ecosystem with various organisms. Ask learners: o What is biodiversity? o Why is biodiversity important? Pose thought-provoking question: o What would happen if all bees disappeared? Begin the lesson by asking the learners: o What do you know about endangered species? o Why do you think some animals are endangered? Introduce the topic of species extinction and explain that today’s lesson will focus on understanding the reasons behind it and perhaps you can think or suggest some possible ways to mitigate species extinction. Discuss different causes of species extinction using video clips and pictures. Habitat Destruction: Explain the different human activities causing habitat loss. Pollution: Discuss the impacts of pollution, including air and water pollution, on ecosystems and how it affects species survival. Overexploitation: Discuss how overhunting, overfishing, and illegal wildlife trade can drive species to extinction. Climate Change: Discuss how temperature changes impact species survival. Invasive Species: Describe how the introduction of non-native species disrupts ecosystems. Divide students into small groups. o Assign each group one cause of species extinction (deforestation, climate change, or invasive species). o Have them create simple posters or diagrams illustrating the cause and its effects on species. o Have each group present their findings. Matching Activity: o Distribute the cause cards to half of the group and the species cards to the other half. o Learners match a cause card with an appropriate species card. o Encourage discussion and reasoning behind their choices. Some practical applications associated to biodiversity and ecosystem stability that can be incorporated into daily living: o Waste Reduction and Recycling o Reducing Chemical Usage o Supporting Conservation Efforts o Supporting Local Biodiversity o Educating Others: H. Making generalizations and abstractions about the lesson (Explain) Ask learners: o What did you learn about the causes of species extinction? o Why is it essential to protect biodiversity? I.
