DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN SCIENCE 5 MELC: Characterize weather disturbances in the Philippines and describe their effects. I. LESSON OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to: I. Identify the different weather disturbances in the Philippines II. SUBJECT MATTER: A. Topic: Identify the cause of weather disturbances B. References: C. Materials: television ( for video an powerpoint presentation) colored paper and pictures III. LEARNING ACTIVITIES (PROCEDURE) Teacher’s Activity A. Preliminary Activities 1. Prayer “I would like to request Princess to please lead the prayer.” Student’s Activity “Dear Loving Father…. Amen.” 2. Greetings “Good morning class!” “You may now take your seats.” “Good morning Ma’am! Good morning classmates!” “Thank you ma’am” 3. Review What was the lesson we tackled last meeting, class? “What are those effects of soil erosion on living things?” “Our topic last meeting was about the Effects of soil erosion on living things.” Effects on Plants Effects on Animals Effects on Humans “Very Good!” Now, let’s see if you still remember our previous lesson, I will provide each row with words written on metacards. Task: Select the metacards where effects of soil erosion are written and post them on the space provided for group on the board. Effects on Plants •________________________ •________________________ Effects on Animals •Less production of food •Plants will not grow well due to lack of nutrients •________________________ Effects on Humans •________________________ •________________________ •Affects aquatic animals •Farmers have difficulty sustaining their lives •Mine tailing B. Developmental Activities 1. Motivation I prepare a music video related to our lesson. Now let us sing a song about weather. Are you ready? Yes, we are! (The pupils will sing.) Did you enjoy the song? Yes ma’am. Now what can you say about the picture? The weather today is sunny. What have you observed about the weather condition? It is quite dark. What do you think is supposed to happen? There is a big possibility that will rain. 2. Presentation “Our lesson for today is all about Weather Disturbances.” 3. Discussion Typhoon Yolanda November 8, 2013 The Philippines experiences an average of 20 typhoons a year. Being surrounded by bodies of water makes us prone to experience some weather disturbances. A typhoon is just one of the many weather disturbances we experience. It brings heavy rains, floods, and landslides. Can you name other weather disturbances? Look at the sky. Can you tell what the weather is? Weather - is the condition of the atmosphere at a short period of time. Weather disturbances - refers to any disruption of the atmosphere’s stable condition. (Pupils are listening) Storm ma’am. (Pupils will answer) Types of Weather disturbances 1. Storm – is a violent disturbance in atmosphere marked by sudden changes in air pressure and rapid air movement. Do you have an idea how these storms happen? 2. Thunderstorms - Is a localized storm cloud that produces thunder and lightning. It is one of the most common types of weather disturbance that experience in the country. But do you know what causes this thunderstorm? We experienced storms that brought heavy rainfall and strong wind. (Pupils will give their own idea) 3. Hurricane - A tropical storm with sustained winds of at least 120 km/hr. Hurricanes, consider the move violent storms on earth, have several names depending on location where they are formed. 4. Tropical Cyclones - Form when warm air moves over the surface of the ocean, creating a massive amount of water vapor. Tropical cyclone are classified four according to the maximum speed of the wind blowing near the center. Tropical Depression – a cyclone where a maximum wind blows near the center does not exceed to 64 kilometers per hour. Tropical Storm – a cyclone where a maximum wind blows near the center has a speed of 65-118 kilometers per hour. Typhoon - a cyclone where a maximum wind blows near the center has a speed of 119-200 kilometers per hour. Super Typhoon - a cyclone where a maximum wind blows near the center has a speed of greater than 200 kilometers per hour. 3. Practice Supply the missing letters. 1. How do typhoon and other weather disturbances affect the environment and people in the community? 2. Generalization What is weather disturbances? What are the different types of weather disturbances? “Very good.
