Storage Devices Task
Storage Device
Hard Disk
Advantages
 Holds plenty data
 Relatively cheap
Disadvantages
 Not portable since it is screwed into the
computer chase, but you can buy an
external hard disk.
 Faster than external storage devices  Data can be damaged if the read/write
head of it crashes
 Data can be written to it and
deleted from it plenty times
 Very reliable if it is not damaged.
 Doesn’t take up plenty space
Magnetic tape
backup
 The cheapest form of storing data
on a per megabyte basis
 Holds plenty data
 Backing up can be set to overnight
or over the weekend
 Slow to access data as it uses serial
access (starts from the beginning then
continues going through the data stored
until it reaches the specific data that is
needed)
 Magnets can corrupt the tape

CD-ROM
 Not considered portable as it needs
special equipment to read the data on
it
 Has a limited life span and the quality of
it declines overtime
 Data cannot be changed
 Very Cheap
 Faster than CD-RW
 If scratched the data may not be
readable
 Easy to use
CD-RW
 Can be erased and reused
 Slower than hard disk
 It has a slower burning and reading
speed than CD-ROM
 It is the best CD for transferring data
 It is more expensive than CD-ROM
 Small and Portable
DVD
 Very large storage capacity 4.7-9

speeds.
 Durability. It does not contain any
moving parts which means it is
durable.
 Form Factor. Flash memories comes
in different forms
Network storage
 Cost. It is expensive.
 Lifetime. Although flash memories are
more durable than hard drive disks its
lifetime isn’t infinite.
 Capacity. Though it has a variety of
capacities. The ones with more storage
costs more.
 Reliability. It is more reliability
 Editing Works. It rewrites data in block

units which is done one by one. That
drive which has a moving
