Bees and Wasps
Did you know Bees love to collect pollen? This is very important
to plants so they can get pollinated and so the bees can feed their
young. Wasp do not store pollen but eat the nectar for energy, but
wasps and bees both help plants by pollenating. These are some of
the many differences and similarities between bees and wasps.
These little creatures can make big hives! They both like hives
around 1.35 cu ft. Bees make theirs with bees wax and wasps make
theirs with wood fibers. With these big hives, they can have lots of
room! The queen bee will lay 2000 eggs a day, while the queen wasp
will lay 200-300 eggs a day. All those bees and wasps make them very
social insects. The bees make the hive with all their numbers and the
wasps have the queen make the nest.
You may already know that bees make honey. But did you know
they can make 2 pounds a day! A single bee only makes 1/12 of a
teaspoon in its lifetime! Thats teamwork alright! To get the nectar to
make honey, bees will fly up to 8 miles! Wasps will only fly 300-1000
yards to find food.
We have learned that bees and wasps like to pollenate and make
big hives. We have also learned that their queens lay up to thousands
of eggs. These are some of the many differences and similarities of
some of Gods beautiful creations.
