LESSON PLAN Unit: 6/ 2BAC / Skill: Reading/ Cultural Shocks Integrated skills: Speaking and Writing Time 40 min Procedures/ Activities Warm up: Today, we're going to learn about cultural shocks – those surprising and shocking experiences we may face when we step into a new culture. (teacher may share some famous cultural shocks from around the world) Activity 1: Pre-Reading Alright, class, are you ready to dive into our cultural exploration? Great! Now, before we begin, I want you to take a moment and guess which countries we might be learning about today. Think about the unique cultures, traditions, and customs you've heard about or perhaps experienced yourself. [Pause for students to make guesses.] Now, let's unveil the destinations we'll be visiting today. Drumroll, please! [Teacher reveals the names of the four countries: Japan, India, Brazil, and Germany.] Exciting, isn't it? Now, here's how our activity will work: Activity 2: While-Reading You’ll notice that there are four texts hanging on the walls of our classroom, each representing one of the countries we’ve just mentioned. You’ll also have question cards corresponding to each passage. INSTRUCTIONS Reading and Moving: Your task is to read the questions on your cards, stand up, and move around the classroom to find the passages that contain the answers. Take your time to read each passage carefully and locate the information you need to answer the questions. Recording Answers: Once you’ve found the information, write down the answers to the questions on your cards. Make sure to write clearly and accurately so you can share your findings later. Crowd Control: Lastly, I want to emphasize the importance of avoiding crowding around a single passage. Activity 3: Post-Reading Group Work: Teacher assigns each group with a passage. Instruct them to discuss the cultural shocks mentioned in their respective passages and compare them with their own cultural experiences or expectations. Mr. Hayat Hicham Passage 1: Cultural Shock in Japan Travelers to Japan often experience cultural shock because of the differences between their home country and Japan. One common shock is the concept of personal space. In Japan, personal space is minimal, and people may stand much closer to each other than what Westerners are habituated to. This can be uncomfortable for those who value their personal space. Additionally, the etiquette surrounding bowing can be confusing for newcomers. Understanding the different levels of bows and when to use them is essential to social interactions in Japan. Furthermore, Japanese society places a strong emphasis on respect for elders and authority figures, which may differ from the values of some visitors. الركوعBow الوافدون الجددNewcomers توكيدEmphasis Passage 2: Culture Shock in India Visitors to India often encounter culture shock, particularly in terms of the diverse cuisine and the busy streets. Indian food is rich in flavors and spices, which can be overwhelming for those unfamiliar with it. Moreover, the noisy traffic and crowded markets can be challenging for tourists accustomed to more orderly surroundings. Additionally, the vibrant and diverse clothing worn by locals may surprise visitors, as it differs greatly from Western clothing. Furthermore, the caste (social class) system, although officially abolished, still influences social interactions and may be challenging for outsiders to comprehend. متنوع Diverse مزدحم Crowded إلغاء abolished Passage 3: Culture Shock in Brazil Travelers to Brazil often experience culture shock, particularly regarding the way of life and social customs. Brazilians tend to have a more relaxed attitude towards time, which can be a new way of life for those accustomed to punctuality. Furthermore, the emphasis on physical touch in social interactions, such as hugs and kisses on the cheek, may surprise visitors from more reserved cultures. Additionally, the lively street parties and festivals that usually take place can be annoying for newcomers. Moreover, the diversity of languages spoken in Brazil, including Portuguese, indigenous languages, and immigrant dialects, adds another form of complexity to the cultural life in Brazil. االلتزام بالمواعيدPunctuality التفاعالت االجتماعيةSocial interactions توكيدEmphasis الثقافات المثحفظةReserved cultures Passage 4: Culture Shock in Germany Foreigners visiting Germany may experience culture shock, especially about communication styles and eating habits. Germans are more direct and straightforward and value efficiency in their interactions, which may come across as bizarre to those from more indirect cultures. Moreover, the heavy consumption of bread and meat in German cuisine can be challenging for visitors with food restrictions or preferences. Additionally, the practice of separating rubbish for recycling purposes may be unfamiliar to tourists from countries with less strict recycling rules. Furthermore, punctuality is highly valued in Germany, and being late for appointments or meetings is considered disrespectful. واضح ومباشرStraightforward االستهالك الثقيلHeavy consumption الكفاءةeffeciency CUT the following and give each student a card for the questions. 1.
