Sentence
“A sentence is a group of words arranged in a way that it expresses
a thought or a complete idea and makes complete sense.”

A sentence starts with a capital letter and ends with a full Stop
or a question mark.
EXAMPLES
1. Sun rises in the East.
2. I like to eat Pizza.
3. Sana studies fine arts at NCA.
STRUCTURE OF A SENTENCE
Subject
“It is usually a noun or a
pronoun that tells who or
what the sentence is
about.” For example: The
dog is playing with a ball.
Verb
Object
Verb is the action that is
being done by the subject
in a sentence”. For
example: The dog is
playing with a ball.
Object is the word or the
thing on which the action
is being done”. For
example: The dog is
playing with a ball.
TYPES OF CLAUSES IN A SENTENCE
Independent Clause
Dependent Clause
A group of words that can
express a complete thought
and can stand alone as a
sentence. For Example : The cat
sleeps.
A group of words that have a
subject and verb but do not
express complete idea on their
own as a sentence. For
example: “when she finished
cooking.”
Types of a Sentence
Simple
Has a subject, verb and usually an
object, modifiers/compliments
and one independent clause.
Example: The dog barks.
The child cries.
Complex
Contains both independent
and dependent clause in it.”
Example: We missed the class
because we were late.
Compound
Two or more independent
clauses that are combined
with a comma or a
conjunction. Example: She
completed her assignment
and she did the house chores.
Complex-Compound
Consists of at least two
independent clauses and one
or more dependent clauses.
Example: He missed the test
because he was ill but the
teacher was not happy.
Types of a Sentence (on the basis of Conveying
information)
Declarative
Makes a statement or declares a fact.
Example: The sun rises in the East.
The boy is eating bananas.
Interrogative
Asks a question and requires an answer.
starts with a question word like who,
what, when, why etc., and ends with a
question mark. Example: What is your
name?
Where do you live?
Imperative
An imperative sentence expresses a
command, request, order, or instruction.
Example: Please close the door.
Stand up.
Exclamatory
Expresses strong emotions or surprise. It ends
with an exclamation mark to show
emphasis. Example: It's a beautiful day!
