Course Objectives:
The students after going through this course will be able to understand the various aspects of
business in a holistic manner. This will include private enterprise system, the world economic
system and contrast it to other possibilities; various functional areas of business-- accounting,
finance, management, and marketing--and how these areas are interrelated by means of
information systems.
Course Contents:
1.
Concepts of Business: Definition of Business, Barter System, Economic Activities of
Human Being, Difference between Economic and Non-Economic Activities, Difference
among Business, Profession and Employment, Features/Characteristics of Business,
Objectives of Business, Role of Profit, Scope of Business, Industry, Types of Industry,
Commerce, and Types of Commerce.
2.
Location of Business: Introduction, Definition, Importance, Business Location Strategy,
Advantages and Disadvantages of Urban and Rural Area for Business Location, and
Factors to be Considered in Selecting Appropriate Site for a Business.
3.
Sole Proprietorship: Introduction, Definition, Features, Merits and Demerits, and
Suitability of Sole Proprietorship.
4.
Partnership: Introduction, Definition, Features, Merits and Demerits, Difference between
sole trader and partnership, Partnership deed, Main contents of partnership deed, Types of
partners, Kinds of partnership, Registration of firms, Procedure for registration, Effects of
non- registration, and Dissolution of partnership firm.
5.
Joint Stock Company: Definition, Features, Classification of Company, Distinction
between Public limited and Private limited company, Formation of company,
Memorandum of association, Contents of memorandum of association, Articles of
association, Contents of articles of association, and Prospectus.
6.
Cooperative Societies: Definition, Features, Objectives, Principles, Types, Formation
procedure, Distinction between Co-operative and Joint Stock Company, and Problems of
expansion of Cooperatives in Bangladesh.

State Enterprise: Definition, State-owned enterprises in Bangladesh, Features,
Objectives, Advantages and disadvantages, Reasonability of state enterprise in
Bangladesh, and Reasons for failure, Public-Private Partnership (PPP) business.

Business Environment: Introduction, Definition, Importance, Dimensions, Internal
Factors, and External Factors.

Small Scale Industry and Business: Introduction, Definition, Classification, Importance,
Advantages, Challenges, Steps in Setting Up of a Small Scale Business, Concept of Startup.
10.
Trade: Introduction, Definition, Types, International Trade, Export Trade its Procedure,
Import Trade and its Procedure, and Entrepot Trade.
11.
Business Combination and MNCs: Causes, Types, and Forms of Business Combination,
Types, Levels, Internal and External, Advantages and Disadvantages, MNC, Argument for
and against MNCs, Types, Strategies of MNCs to enter in to a business, MNCs in
Bangladesh, Growth of EPZs.
12.
Institutions for promotion of business: Support Services of Government Institutions,
Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Trade Associations, The Dhaka Stock Exchange, The
Chittagong Stock Exchange and BSEC.
