Message from Director
Dear friends,
The urgency of developing semiconductor chips, or integrated circuits, has significantly
increased as they are now ubiquitous components in almost every modern electronic
device. In light of the rapid growth in demand for semiconductor devices in the country,
there is a pressing need to expand the pool of skilled manpower to support the
industry. Meeting this demand poses a significant challenge, making it all the more
crucial for India as well as overseas to prioritize the development of a competent
workforce with the necessary skills to address the burgeoning demand for
semiconductors. Keeping all the parameters in mind of the semiconductor ecosystem,
IIT Hyderabad took a major leap forward and launched India’s very first specialized
master’s program, M.Tech in Semiconductors Materials and Devices. The program
covers every aspect of semiconductor fabrication, right from the extraction, crystal
growth, device fabrication along with device characterization, making the theme of the
course as “Sand to Circuits”.
By means of cutting-edge lab resources, visits to industrial sites, direct engagement
with industry experts, and undertaking rigorous research projects, students are
imparted the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of the field of semiconductor
manufacturing. This multifaceted approach allows for a comprehensive and practical
understanding of the subject matter, with a firm grounding in both theory and
application.
I am confident that this dedicated program will cater to the Semiconductor Industrial
needs both nationally and globally.

Message from HOD
Dear Recruiter
Greetings from the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering,
Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad. We sincerely hope that some of our students
will soon be part of your esteemed organization, and rest assured that they will
contribute immensely to the progress of your organization.
The Indian Semiconductor market stands at $15Bn in 2020 and is expected to cross
$110Bn by 2030 which will be approximately 10% of the global market. To generate the
required skilled manpower for the Semiconductor industries under the National
Semiconductor Mission initiate by the government of India, our department pioneered
a program on Semiconductors Materials and Devices for the first time in India. This
program offers course works covering broad fields of electronic materials and
electronic devices, from fundamentals to advanced and emerging areas such as
semiconductors materials extraction, crystal growth, flexible electronics,
optoelectronics, thin films and devices, organic semiconductors, electron microscopy,
to name a few, which impart strong foundation on several major aspects of
semiconductors that enhances the state of the knowledge of the students.
Prof Saswata Bhattacharya
HOD, MSME
Most of the teaching courses contain practical components and along with the lab practicals and project-based thesis (one year in the M.Tech. program),
the students are given ample opportunities to gain hands-on expertise in all semiconductor-related instruments and techniques. To explain more, the
students acquire industry-relevant skills by learning the principles and having hands-on practice of major fabrication techniques like lithography, thin
film deposition, device simulation and characterization techniques such as probe station, X-Ray diffraction, optical and electron microscopy as well as
spectroscopy. These young minds are well trained to work on futuristic areas of R&D/Technology Developments for your organization. In addition,
they learn various multi-scale computational materials modelling techniques as well.

Semiconductor Material and devices
M.Tech in Semiconductor Materials and Devices is first of its kind program
offered by MSME department of IIT Hyderabad in India. The program gives a
gateway towards technical research in electronic materials and devices with
strong emphasis on semiconductors. It is an interdisciplinary program that aims
to nurture expertise in the field of semiconductors.
The program aims to nurture expertise in Semiconductor Materials and Devices,
one of essential resources to make India as the global hub for Electronic Systems
and Manufacturing. The program is in line with the recent expansion of the vision
of Aatmanirbhar Bharat in setting up of India Semiconductor Mission
By the year 2030, the global need of AI+IoT devices are predicted to be more
than 350 billion, with semiconductor as its building block. This specialized
program serves the objective of India’s semiconductor mission and is of
paramount importance to meet the technological demands globally.
