CHRISTIAN LIVING 9 Prepared by: Group 1 2 SOCIAL JUSTICE 3 The term justice comes from the Old English iustise which means “administration of the law” via the Old and Latin justitia and justus. 4 The concept of justice is represented by a blindfolded lady holding scale and a sword, all connoting equity or 5 objectivity in the pursuit of truth and fairness. 6 JUSTIA 7 The sword symbolizes due punishment in the eyes of the law. Commonly seen in legal institutions, Lady justice Justia. 9 JUSTIA 10 Social justice is a social contract among men that asserts the protection of 11 equal access to civil liberties, rights, and opportunities. Social justice is a broad concept, and in many practical 12 situation, one either exercises or violates it. 13 In the context of social justice, equality should not be 14 understood as sameness but rather fairness or impartiality. Justice is something people are entitled to regardless of their 15 socio-economic status. 16 All people have the responsibility to give others what they deserve. 17 Depriving others of privileges and opportunities destroys the social balance that is social justice. 18 Hence, the needs of others should be addressed in the most appropriate means and circumstances. 19 The absence of such is a direct violation of social justice. By the same token, the citizens who are endowed with time, knowledge, 20 influence, and resources must also pool all their assets to respond to the national call for relief operations. 21 Ignoring this call is also a violation of social justice since everyone is interconnected in the spirit of moral accountability as one people. REMINDER: • Social justice aims for people to treat others equally and not based on biases, gender, status, or etc. 22 • This is to protect people from being ruled as an underclass that will lead to be barred from certain public services. 23 • It also aims to bring balance amongst the people as to prevent others from causing discrimination to others below their status. 24 CHRISTIAN LIVING 9 Prepared by: Group 1
